Vikings Close Whirlwind Fall Season at Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational Next Week

PORTLAND, Ore. — The whirlwind fall season for the Portland State women's golf program comes to an end next week at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational at Tacoma Golf and Country Club.

The fourth tournament in as many weeks for the Vikings, the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational will be the Vikings' last tournament until February when they return to play at the Mountain Classic Math Play tournament, Feb. 8-10.

The Vikings come into their fall finale with some momentum thanks to Cynthia Valerie Ong and Maddie Dustin both recording career-best finishes earlier this week at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate. Ong made up three strokes over the final two holes to tie for the win at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate. She parred then birdied the last two holes while Montana's Zoe Bar-Or bogeyed both to put both players at seven-over par.

Ong closed with her best round of the tournament, shooting a one-over 72 in the third round to finish at 220 (75-73-72). She has a season scoring average of 73.33 through nine rounds this fall, with eight of her nine rounds being 75 or under.

Her win at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate also followed a runner-up finish at the Wolverine Invitational. She closed that tournament with back-to-back four-under 68s, tying her career-best single-round score in terms of distance to par.

Dustin, meanwhile, tied for third at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate, setting a career-best finish for the junior. She finished four strokes back of Ong and Bar-Or with a 224 (76-72-76). All three rounds were below her season scoring average, which dropped to 77.00 after the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate.

Caithlyn Ong also recorded her second top 10 finish out of three tournaments this fall. She tied for 10th at 231 (75-80-76).

All three golfers will be familiar with the Tacoma Golf and Country Club course that they'll tackle next week at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational. It's one of the Vikings' most familiar fall tournaments, having played there seven times before, including each of the previous five seasons. Payten Shimizu led the Vikings at last season's tournament, tying for 30th at 223 (78-71-74).

Caithlyn Ong led the group of Vikings who will be returning to the tournament this season, as she placed 56th overall with a 231 (75-80-76). Cynthia Valerie Ong tied with teammate Francesca Tomp for 62nd with identical 234s (Ong: 74-80-80; Tomp: 83-78-73). Tomp's third-round 73 remains her career-best 18-hole score. Dustin, meanwhile, tied for 69th at 236 (77-83-76).

Momo Udom didn't compete at last season's tournament, but she did compete in 2023 and 2024. She posted her best finish at the tournament last season, when she tied for 87th overall at 236 (80-78-78).

Play begins with two rounds Monday with a final round scheduled for Tuesday.

By the end of Tuesday's third round, all five Vikings will have played 216 holes of tournament golf over the past four weeks. It's been a crash course in how to play a college tournament. The Vikings can finally take a break to see what they've retained from that after next week.
