PORTLAND, Ore. — As season debuts go, the Portland State women's golf team couldn't have asked for much better than what it got at the Wolverine Invitational earlier this week. They'll take that into more familiar territory as they head to the Kalispel Invitational, Sept. 21-22, for the second straight season.
 
The Vikings posted their lowest score in a debut tournament in nine seasons while carding an 897 (305-300-292) at the Wolverine Invitational. Their third-round score of 292 would have been their second-lowest score in a single round over the entire 2025-26 season.
 
Cynthia Valerie Ong led the Vikings to the strong debut. She tied the third-best 54-hole score in program history with a five-under par 211 (75-68-68). Ong closed with back-to-back, four-under par 68s, matching her lowest under-par round that she set at the Big Sky Championships last season.
 
Caithlyn Ong joined her sister under par with a one-under 71 in the third round. The Ong sisters finished second and tied for ninth, respectively, with Cynthia's runner-up finish marking the highest by a Viking since Tya Seth placed second at the 2022 Eagle Invitational.
 
Both Ong sisters, as well as Maddie Dustin and Francesca Tomp, will take experience with them into next week's Kalispel Invitational. All four played at the tournament last season, hosted at the Kalispel Golf and Country Club. Dustin led the Vikings last season with a 54-hole score of 226 (77-74-75), tying her for 29th overall. Cynthia Valerie Ong posted the low round of the tournament, recording a one-over par 73 in the second round while finishing with a 54-hole score of 229 (77-73-79). Caithlyn Ong and Tomp both finished at 234 (Ong – 79-76-79; Tomp – 81-79-74).
 
Eastern Washington hosts the Kalispel Invitational, while fellow Big Sky Conference schools Utah Tech and Idaho join the Vikings and Eagles at the tournament. All four schools played at the Wolverine Invitational, with the Vikings finishing the highest of the bunch at seventh.
 
That was part of the strong debut for the Vikings. Now they'll look to compound the promise with another strong showing on familiar territory.
