SARASOTA SPRINGS, Utah — Cynthia Valerie Ong must have been itching to play golf again for the Portland State women's golf team.
How else do you explain a first tournament in which you tie your lowest under-par round…twice. Ong shot a four-under par 68 in the second round Monday, then matched that with a 68 in the third round Tuesday at the Wolverine Invitational. The four-under-par score equals her distance to par in the final round of the Big Sky Championships, when she finished with a 67 on a par 71 course.
Ong recorded six birdies en route to her 68 Tuesday. Out of those, five came over her last nine holes, including three in a row on holes five, six and seven at Talons Grove Golf Club.
The back-to-back 68s led Ong to a career-best 54-hole tournament score, as she finished five-under par at 211 (75-68-68). Ong finished second overall at the tournament, three shots behind Southern Utah's Saylar May, who won the event with an eight-under par 208 (68-68-72). The second-place finish marked another career best for Ong, as well as the lowest finish by any Viking since Tya Seth placed second at the 2022 Eagle Invitational.
Ong's low finish helped lead the Vikings to a four-over par 292 as a team over Tuesday's third round. That would have been the Vikings' second-best round last season, trailing only the 291 the Vikings shot in the third round of the Jackrabbits Invitational. The Vikings finished seventh out of 10 teams (305-300-292=897), putting them ahead of fellow Big Sky schools Eastern Washington (309-303-289=901), Utah Tech (298-306-297=901) and Idaho (313-308-300=921). Utah Valley won its home tournament, finishing two shots ahead of first-day leader Wyoming, 875 (290-298-287) to 877 (293-289-295).
Caithlyn Ong joined her sister under par Tuesday, shooting a one-under par 71 to vault into the top 10 of the leaderboard. Ong finished tied for ninth at three-over par for the tournament, putting her one stroke off her career-best at 219 (74-74-71). Ong started red hot Tuesday, birdieing four of her first 10 holes. She finished with five birdies and four bogeys while parring the other nine.
Maddie Dustin finished 19-over par at 235 (75-81-79) as the Vikings' third-lowest scorer.
Momo Udom posted her best round of the tournament Tuesday while closing with a two-over par 74. That was seven shots better than her first-round score of 81, and 11 shots better than her second-round score of 85. She posted the most pars of any Viking Tuesday, parring 14 of the 18 holes while birdieing one and bogeying three. Udom finished 24-over par for the tournament at 240.
Francesca Tomp closed her first tournament of the season at 247 (84-77-86).
The Vikings are back in action next week at the Kalispel Invitational, Sept. 21-22. The tournament will take place at Kalispel Golf and Country Club in Spokane, Wash.
