SARASOTA SPRINGS, Utah — Cynthia Valerie Ong ended last year with a program record-tying 67 in the last round of the Big Sky Championships. This year, it took her all of two rounds to nearly match that as she led the Vikings on the opening day of the Wolverine Invitational at Talons Cove Golf Club.
Â
Ong carded a second-round 68 (-4) putting her tied for third on the individual leaderboard at one-under par (143) for the tournament. Monday's 68 for Ong matched her lowest round under par as a Viking, as last year's 67 at the conference tournament came on a par-71 course.
Â
Ong's low round led the Vikings to an improved second round as a team. The Vikings shot 300 (+12) in the second round after carding a 305 (+1) in the first round. The Vikings sit in seventh after the opening two rounds. Wyoming leads the tournament at +6 (293-289=582).
Â
Big Sky schools Weber State (+15, 291-300=591, Southern Utah (+20, 301-295=596), Idaho State (+23, 298-301=599) and Utah Tech (+28, 298-306=604) stand ahead of the Vikings. Portland State leads fellow conference schools Eastern Washington (+36, 309-303=612) and Idaho (+45, 313-308=621).
Â
Ong's sister,
Caithlyn Ong, finished the opening day of the tournament second on the Vikings' roster. She was the picture of consistency, carding a two-over par 74 in both rounds Monday. She now sits in a tie for 12th at four-over par (74-74=148).
Â
Maddie Dustin had a strong opening round of the day, shooting a three-over par 75. She posted a nine-over par 81 in the second round, leaving her tied for 44th at 12-over par for the tournament.
Â
Francesca Tomp had the biggest improvement from round-to-round for the Vikings. She shot a 12-over-par 84 in the opening round but then followed with a five-over-par 77 in the second round.
Â
Momo Udom finished 22-over-par (81-85=166) after the opening day.
Â
Play resumes for the third and final round tomorrow at 7 p.m.
