Three Vikings Named to All-Big Sky Teams; Nakoa-Chung Highlights Group with First Team Nod

FARMINGTON, Utah – Portland State softball placed three players on All-Big Sky teams, the conference announced Thursday.

Senior dual-threat Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung headlined the group with a first-team selection at the pitcher/utility position, marking the second all-conference honor of her career. Third baseman Breanna Lutz earned second-team honors, while Abigail Carsley was named honorable mention as a non-pitcher/utility player.

Nakoa-Chung becomes the first player in program history to earn first-team honors in the pitcher/utility category. A second-team selection in 2025, the senior was the only Viking named to the 2026 preseason all-conference team and lived up to the expectations. She led the Vikings in the circle with a 3.77 ERA and a 9-10 record, including a 4-3 mark in Big Sky play. Nakoa-Chung paced the conference in multiple pitching categories, including strikeouts (99), strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.61), games started (22) and innings pitched (131.2). Her 14 complete games also led the conference and ranks 27th among NCAA Division I pitchers. Additionally, she tossed two shutouts, highlighted by a seven-inning no-hitter against North Dakota and received two Big Sky Pitcher of the Week honors. Also contributing offensively, the Hawai'i native recorded 15 hits, including a .286 mark in conference play (6-for-21) and tallied 11 RBI on the year.

Nakoa-Chung is the 12th Viking under head coach Meadow McWhorter to earn first-team All-Big Sky recognition.

Lutz and Carsley each earned the first all-conference honors of their careers on Thursday. Lutz was a second-team selection at third base after an impressive conference slate. The junior hit .400 (16-for-40) with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI while posting a .538 on-base percentage against Big Sky opponents, the third-best mark in the conference. The Ramona, Calif., native led the Vikings with 12 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI games, while putting together a season-long eight-game hitting streak. Defensively, Lutz totaled 45 putouts and 50 assists in the infield.

Carsley rounded out the group with honorable mention honors. The redshirt sophomore showcased her versatility in the field, seeing action at both catcher and first base, earning all-conference recognition as a utility player. She led the Vikings with 12 RBI in conference play, hitting .325 (13-for-40) across 15 games with a .417 on-base percentage. Carsley totaled 11 extra-base hits on the year with a team-high five home runs and ranked second on the team with a .432 slugging percentage.

McWhorter and the Vikings finished the regular season sixth in the Big Sky standings and will head to Pocatello, Idaho, next week for the conference tournament. The team opens play against third-seeded Sacramento State on Monday, May 4, at 10:30 a.m. PT.
