Vikings Fall to Hornets in Regular Season Finale

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Portland State softball dropped its regular-season finale, 10-2, to Sacramento State on Saturday, as the Hornets completed the series sweep in six innings at Shea Stadium.

The Vikings put together their best offensive game of the series, tallying six hits. Sacramento State recorded eight hits and took advantage of three Viking errors, combining early scoring with a six-run sixth to secure the run-rule victory.

Portland State finishes the regular season at 14-30 (4-11 BSC) and will enter the Big Sky Tournament (May 4-8) as the No. 6 seed. Sacramento State (30-17, 9-6) earned the No. 4 seed with the series win.

Sacramento State jumped out quickly on Saturday, plating three runs in the first inning behind a two-run double and a Viking error, then added another run in the second to take a 4-0 lead.

The Vikings answered in the third. After a walk from Jacobi Coombs and a single by Grace Johnson, Breanna Lutz drove in a run with a base hit up the middle to cut the deficit to 4-1. Two innings later, the Hornets extended their lead with two runs in the fifth, capitalizing on extra-base hits to push the margin to 6-1. The Vikings answered in the sixth, when Sierra Llamas singled and later scored on an RBI single from Gracie Toney to make it 6-2.

Sacramento State responded in the bottom half with the decisive rally, delivering a grand slam to end the game early at 10-2.

Johnson and Llamas each recorded two hits in the loss, while Llamas led the Vikings in the series with four hits and a .444 average (4-for-9). Giselle Pantoja (1-5) took the loss in the circle, tossing five innings before Claire Masters entered in relief.

The Vikings will turn their attention to postseason play at the Big Sky Tournament, set for May 4-8 in Pocatello, Idaho.
