SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Portland State softball dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Sacramento State on Friday, falling 5-1 in the opener before a 3-0 loss in game two at Shea Stadium.
The Vikings moved to 14-29 overall and 4-10 in Big Sky play, while the Hornets improved to 29-17 (8-6 BSC).
Sacramento State took control early in game one, scoring once in the first and adding three runs in the second to build a 4-1 lead. Portland State's lone run came in the second inning when Sierra Llamas drove in Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung with a single up the middle. The Hornets added an insurance run in the fourth and held the Vikings hitless the rest of the way to secure the 5-1 win.
Nakoa-Chung tossed her 14th complete game of the season, falling to 9-10 on the year. The Vikings finished with just two hits, coming from Llamas and Grace Johnson.
Game two followed a similar script, as Sacramento State scored twice in the second inning on a solo home run and a sacrifice fly, then added another run in the third to take a 3-0 lead. That lead remained the same as they shut out the VIkings' offense, once again limiting them to just two hits.Â
Llamas accounted for one of the Vikings' hits while Jolee Benson added the other. Gracie Walters turned in a solid outing despite the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits across six innings.
The two teams will conclude the series Saturday, with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m., as they close out the regular season.
