FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Portland State freshman Anjola Ige picked up her first career Big Sky Conference win Sunday at Northern Arizona, accounting for the Vikings' lone point in a 6-1 loss to the Lumberjacks at the NAU Tennis Center.
The Vikings dropped to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play after surrendering the doubles point to open the match. Northern Arizona (3-5, 2-1) secured the point with 6-0 wins on the top two courts. Scarlett Perkins and Ige were trailing 3-2 at line three when the point was decided, leaving their match unfinished.
NAU clinched the team victory with straight-set singles wins on courts one, three and four, but had to work for the remaining points. Looking for her ninth straight singles win, Marta Giglio took the first set at No. 2 before Andrea Noguera responded with a 6-3 second-set win and edged the super tiebreak, 10-8, to snap Giglio's streak.
Meanwhile, Hana Abdelhamid pushed her match to a third set at No. 5. After dropping the opener 6-2 to Leontina Stojanovic, she answered with a 6-2 second set, but came up short in the super tiebreak, 10-5.
Ige provided the highlight for the Vikings, earning a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win over Mia Wolter at No. 6.
Portland State returns to action next Sunday, March 29, when it hosts Idaho at 10 a.m. at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
