Sofiia Ziukyna Wins Consolation Draw as Vikings Wrap Up Gonzaga Invite

SPOKANE, Wash. – Freshman Sofiia Ziukyna starred again for the Vikings on days two and three of the Gonzaga Invite with a 2-0 record and a bracket finals win. She beat Washington State's Clara Schoen in the finals of the North consolation draw within the red singles flight.

Ziukyna defeated the University of Montana's Kate Prichard in a dramatic three-set victory to make the consolation final. She took the first set 6-2 before Prichard came back and won the second, 7-5. The game then proceeded to a 10-point tiebreak where Ziukyna edged out Prichard, 10-8, to take the match.

The finals were a different story. Despite the tough competition she faced, Ziukyna defeated Washington State's Clara Schoen in a commanding two set victory, 6-4, 6-1. That was her first bracket win, and over a Pac-12 player from Washington State, no less.

In the extra matches, PSU went 3-0 overall. Sophomore Anjola Ige notched her first win of the season over Sol Junqera Martinez in a close match that went to three sets. Ige dropped the first set, 2-6, but was unbothered by the deficit, taking the next set 6-2 and winning 7-6 (3) in the third.

Freshman Nikhitha Suresh was the only Viking to play in two extra matches, and she was perfect on the day. She won her first against Olivia Marais (EWU) in a rollercoaster of a match. She opened with a dominant, 6-0 win in the first set, but then only won one game in the second set. The wild momentum swings shifted back in her favor in the third set, however, as she won, 6-2. Suresh's second match against Eastern Washington's Veronika Gayevyk was another fun one. She bageled Gayevyk 6-0 in the first set, for her second consecutive first-set bagel. She dropped the second, 6-4, but won the third, 7-5.

The Vikings head to Eugene to play at the Oregon Invite next, starting on Nov. 6.
