Vikings Battle through Difficult Waters on Day Two of ITA Northwest Regional

STANFORD, Calif. – The Portland State women's tennis team battled among the best in the Northwest Friday, as main draw singles play opened at the ITA Northwest Regional.

The Vikings played their way into three entries in the singles draw. Marta Giglio received an automatic berth into the draw, but Hana Abdelhamid and Nikhitha Suresh won two qualifying matches Thursday to earn their way in.

Abdelhamid and Suresh's reward for playing their way into the draw? First-round matches against two Power Four opponents in Washington's Nela Jandova and Anna-Marie Weissheim, respectively. Both Vikings lost in straight sets, as did Giglio, who won more games but still fell 6-2, 6-4 to Saint Mary's Kei Kato.

The doubles stage proved to be just as difficult as in the main draw, the Vikings' star duo of Abdelhamid and Giglio was felled, 8-2, by the ninth-seeded team in the bracket, Saint Mary's standouts Priya Nelson and Stella Remander.

In the consolation doubles draw, the duo of Scarlett Perkins and Stoney Cooks eliminated Seattle U's Daria Nazarenko and Montserrat Sierra with a 6-3 win.

The Vikings also picked up two wins in consolation singles. Kasumi Hirayama and Nene Uemura both beat players from Eastern Washington. Hirayama beat EWU's Olivia Marais, 6-3 6-4, while Uemura beat the Eagles' Noa Ribera Brisa, 6-2, 6-4.

The rest of the doubles teams lost their opening matches in the consolation draw. Hirayama and Uemura were knocked out by Emma Fantousis and Soledad from San Jose State after a good match, 6-3. The freshman duo of Suresh and Sofiia Ziukyna fell to the University of Portland's Naomi Gracelyn Tio and Abi Anderson, also by a 6-3 score.

All three doubles teams will play in Saturday's extra doubles starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
