SPOKANE, Wash. -- Freshman Sofiia Ziukyna and junior Nene Uemura went undefeated across four matches Friday to start the weekend strong for the Vikings at the Gonzaga Invite.

Uemura and Ziukyna teamed up for the first time in doubles and didn't miss a beat. In their first match, they won a close battle over Montana's Emma Marais and Paige Bott, 7-5. Uemura and Ziukyna then went on to beat Eastern Washington's Olivia Marais and Zoe Pradel, 6-4. The win put the Vikings through to the semifinals, where they'll face off against Gonzaga's Ella Nielsen and Aisulu Zholbolat.

Both were just as strong in the red singles flight. Ziukyna only dropped two games to Eastern Washington's Veronika Gayevyk in the first round, beating Gayevyk, 6-0, 6-2. Uemura, meanwhile, made quick work of her opponent, Zoe Pradel from Eastern Washington. She won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals.

Freshman Nikhitha Suresh pushed top-seeded Luana Avelar of Gonzaga to a third set in her own match. She won the first set, 7-5, but Avelar came back over the next two sets, 6-3, 6-1.

In the blue singles flight, Anjola Ige fell in the quarterfinals to Eastern Washington's Noa Ribera Brisa, dropping two close sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Play resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday when Uemura and Ziukyna face off against Gonzaga's Ella Nielsen and Aisulu Zholbolat in the semifinals of the doubles draw.
