STANFORD, Calif. – The Portland State women's team won two consolation singles and a consolation doubles match Saturday as play continued at the ITA Northwest Regional.
The two singles wins came from doubles partners and juniors
Kasumi Hirayama and
Nene Uemura. Hirayama and Uemura mirrored each other with first-set tiebreaker wins en route to their victories. Hirayama didn't drop a point in her tiebreaker against San Jose State's Cristina Mateos Losada, then won a tight second set for a 7-6 (0), 6-4 victory. Uemura, meanwhile, won a close first-set tiebreaker, 9-7, before her opponent – San Jose State's Nikita Girish – retired.
Nikhitha Suresh played a great match against Mina Koloski of St. Mary's but was defeated 6-3, 7-5. Suresh's doubles partner
Sofiia Ziukyna lost in a similar fashion. Two great sets, but she was ultimately eliminated 6-3, 6-4 by Santa Clara's Alexandra O'Brien.
Suresh and Ziukyna combined for a doubles win earlier in the day, knocking out Pacific's Lily Ung, and Miya Takiguchi, 6-4.
Saturday's matches concluded the Vikings' stay at the tournament. They'll next play at the Gonzaga Invite, Oct. 30-Nov. 1, over Halloween weekend.
