OGDEN, Utah -- An all-conference player in singles and doubles last season, Marta Giglio picked up where she left off with strong showings in both disciplines to lead the Vikings as they opened their fall season at the Big Sky Individual Championships.

Giglio and doubles partner Hana Abdelhamid had match points to advance to the final, but ultimately fell 8-7 (7) in the semifinals to Idaho State's Emmy Richards and Veronika Zarovna. Giglio also advanced to the consolation final in the singles draw alongside teammate Scarlett Perkins. 

Head coach Mike Mucci opted to not have his players play each other in the final, with a PSU player already guaranteed to win the consolation draw.

Giglio and Abdelhamid advanced to the semifinals of the doubles draw with a confident, 8-5 win over Montana State's Angel Bean and Naomi Jean.

In singles, Giglio came in as the third seed but fell to EWU's Zoe Pradel, 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 16. Giglio didn't let the loss get to her however, as she took down Montana State's Lola Bean and Utah Tech's Maya Inouye en route to her consolation finals appearance. She beat Bean in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-3, while she topped Inouye in a match tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 13-11. 

Senior Scarlett Perkins, who is entering her fourth year as part of the Portland State program, participated solely in the singles draw. She fell 6-1, 6-2 to Utah Tech's Mariana Zurita Berdecio in the round of 16 of the main draw. But like Giglio, she bounced back in the consolation draw. 

Comebacks were the name of the game for Perkins. She came back from a first-set loss not once, but twice, winning two match tiebreakers en route to the consolation finals. She came back to beat two players from Weber State between Paulina Aleksandrowicz, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 10-5, and Wencong Song, 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.

The Vikings will head to Stanford University to participate in the ITA Northwest Regionals next week, starting October 8th.
