Mike Mucci Named Head Coach of Portland State Women’s Tennis

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland State has hired Mike Mucci as head coach of its women's tennis program, becoming the ninth head coach in program history.

Mucci had served as interim head coach beginning in early January, just weeks before the Vikings kicked off their 2026 dual season.

Mucci brings extensive collegiate coaching experience, including previous Division I head coaching roles. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach at Penn State, where he was named the 2025 ITA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. He helped guide one of the strongest stretches in program history: the Nittany Lions recorded 14 wins — their most since 2013 — reached a No. 33 national ranking, and earned five Big Ten victories, including a win over No. 14 USC. Mucci also helped Penn State secure its highest-ranked recruiting class in program history in 2024, ranked No. 11 nationally.

Prior to Penn State, Mucci led both the men's and women's programs at Jacksonville State from 2021–23. He guided the men's team to a 31–28 record and the women's team to 31–31 over three seasons, including a program-best 15 wins in 2023 and the women's first postseason victory in ten years. Across three recruiting cycles, Mucci oversaw multiple nationally ranked classes, highlighted by a top-30 national and No. 7 mid-major men's class in 2022 — the best in program history — and the women's first-ever ranked recruiting class, No. 16 among mid-major programs in 2022.

Before Jacksonville State, Mucci served as head women's coach at Southern Utah. He also held assistant coaching roles at Belmont and Delaware, helping the Belmont women's team reach its highest win total in more than 15 years and guiding a men's doubles pair to a No. 8 national ranking and NCAA Round of 16.

Mucci began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, Niagara University, where he served as head coach for both the men's and women's programs. He played at Niagara from 2010–2013, helping lead the highest-ranked teams in school history and earning two ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.
