The Vikings were picked seventh of nine teams in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches Poll released Wednesday after finishing sixth in 2025, a season that earned them a Big Sky Tournament berth for the seventh time in program history and the fourth time in five years. They'll look to return to the tournament again this season under new leadership, as Mike Mucci was recently named the program's interim head coach.
Mucci, who has Division I head coaching experience and most recently served as an assistant at Penn State, will lead a roster of six Vikings, four of whom return from last season.
Junior
Scarlett Perkins is the team's most experienced player, entering her third season at Portland State with 10 career singles wins and 11 doubles victories. She is joined by sophomore returners
Kasumi Hirayama,
Hana Abdelhamid and
Nene Uemura, all of whom made an impact as freshmen in 2025. Hirayama led the team with seven singles wins last season and went 5–3 against Big Sky opponents, while she and Uemura each recorded six doubles victories. Abdelhamid and Uemura split time between the second and third singles lines, combining for six wins.
Rounding out the roster are newcomers
Marta Giglio and
Anjola Ige. Giglio spent her freshman campaign at the University at Buffalo, where she posted nine wins, including six in doubles. Ige, a freshman from Sydney, Australia, will make her collegiate debut on Friday in Eugene.
The Vikings will play 12 matches during the 2026 regular season, including eight against Big Sky opponents, with five duals at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. The Big Sky Tournament is set for April 23–25 in Phoenix, Ariz., with the top six teams in the final regular-season standings qualifying for the tournament.Â
