Vikings Fall to CSUN at Home

Box Score

HILLSBORO, Ore. – Playing shorthanded for more than 65 minutes, the Portland State women's soccer team fell 4-0 to CSUN on Thursday evening at Hillsboro Stadium.

Both teams entered the night in search of their second win of the season, but a first-half red card put the Vikings at a disadvantage they couldn't quite overcome. Senior defender Liv Frazier was sent off in the 25th minute for denying a Matador scoring chance, leaving Portland State to play the remainder of the match with 10 players.

Despite the final score, Viking goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham turned in an impressive performance, facing relentless pressure as CSUN fired 23 shots, including 15 on target. Cunningham came up with 10 saves—tying her career high—and denied the ensuing penalty kick following the red card to keep her team within reach.

After taking an early 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, CSUN added a second just before halftime and tallied two more in the second half (56th and 80th minutes). The Vikings' attack didn't back down, tallying eight of their 12 total shots after the break but couldn't find the net.

Portland State will close out its four-match homestand next weekend, hosting the University of Portland at Hillsboro Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 6:00 p.m.
