Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Hayden Neumann

Vandals Put Two Past Vikings

It was a gray, rainy day in Hillsboro Thursday, and so was the match for the Portland State women's soccer team. With their 2-0 loss versus Idaho, the Vikings' odds of playing in the Big Sky tournament got all the more slim.

The match had a slow start, with only one shot from either team recorded in the first 21 minutes. Aliayha Saldana had a rocket of a shot toward the Vandals' net at that point, but it was off target, sailing up and over the post. Defense from both teams played well, limiting chances to generate offense. In the 23rd minute, however, right after a corner taken by Idaho, the Vandals scored off their second shot in the match, putting them up 1-0.

In the 40th minute, Saldana nearly leveled the match for the Vikings, ripping a shot off from 10 yards out, but the Vandals goalkeeper came up with the save. With shots only 3-3, the Vikings headed into the second half of the match down 1-0.

Three minutes into the second half, in the 48th minute, the Vandals maneuvered their way through the Vikings' defense and put Idaho up 2-0. Just seconds later, Alexi Cataldi very nearly brought the Vikings within one, but her shot went high.

The tone of the match certainly shifted by the last 25 minutes, with the Vikings desperate to score but the Vandals wearing them down. Even so, Sydney Spotts put her foot on the gas, making a beautiful cross to the net in the 67th minute before trying for a shot in the 68th. The Vandals regained possession shortly after, and then it was a dance between the two teams, each fighting for a chance to score. Each team more than tripled their offensive output in the second half, with a final shot count of 15-13 in the Vikings' favor. The match ended with no additional goals scored.

The Vikings next take on Eastern Washington in their final home game of the season, and senior day, on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. PT.
