Vikings Score First on Cataldi Long-Range Shot But Can't Hold Off Bears Comeback

GREELEY, Colo. -- After a disallowed goal and a shot just off the post in the final minute, the Portland State Vikings fell just short in a 2-1 loss against Northern Colorado on Thursday. 

Portland State hit the ground running, outshooting Northern Colorado 4-1 in the first 15 minutes. The Vikings' midfielders played strongly; the Bears kept forcing the ball into the midfield instead of along the sides of the pitch, which ultimately hindered their game. In the 15th minute, Alexi Cataldi scored, earning her first career goal and putting the Vikings up 1-0. 

Almost exactly 11 minutes later in the 26th minute, the Bears sent a soaring ball into the high left of the net, just past goalkeeper Finley Crabtree's grasp. 

The match was tied 1-1 going into the second half. Seven minutes into the half, Aliayha Saldana slid one past the Bears' goalkeeper, but the goal was ultimately disallowed due to a foul committed by a Viking. Still 1-1, Northern Colorado kicked it up a gear, and scored their second goal in the 59th minute. That goal also went under review, but stood. 

Crabtree had herself an impressive few saves, punching the ball out of the box three separate times after the Bears tried to replicate their first goal. 

In the 89th minute, Cataldi very nearly scored an equalizer, but the shot went off the post and couldn't find the back of the net.

The Vikings next take on Northern Arizona on Oct. 25 at 12 p.m. PT.
