Emma Stolte Posts Third Straight Top 10 Finish to Lead Vikings at Mike Johnson Classic

RESULTS

MONMOUTH, Ore. —
Emma Stolte recorded her third top 10 finish in as many meets this season, placing fourth overall Saturday at the Mike Johnson Classic to lead the Vikings at the meet.

Stolte, who was the top collegiate runner behind three unattached finishers, now has more top 10 finishes this season (3) than she had through her first three years combined on the Park Blocks (2). She opened her redshirt junior season with a sixth-place finish at the Lewis & Clark Opener on Aug. 29, then followed with an individual win at the Ash Creek Festival on Sept. 12.

Saturday's meet marked the Vikings' return to Ash Creek Preserve. Taylor Nichols followed her classmate Stolte at 13th overall as the pair led the Viking women to a fifth place finish out of 14 teams. Freshman Farhan Ibrahim led the Viking men in his first race of the season, placing 33rd overall while the men placed sixth out of 13 teams.

Stolte's third straight top 10 came with a personal-best 6k time of 20:49.87. She shaved more than 80 seconds off her previous best at the distance, which came at last season's NCAA West Regional. She moved up to ninth all-time in the cross country 6k at Portland State as a result.

Nichols also set a 6k personal best, finishing in 21:27.90 to shave 43 seconds off her previous mark from the 2023 Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. Nichols started conservatively, sitting in 43rd at the 1k split, but then jumped up to 24th by the 2.5k split and steadily moved up the rest of the way.

Sam Sharp, one of the Viking freshmen running her first 6k race, placed 30th overall as the Vikings' third runner. Sharp finished her first 6k in 21:57.60.

Sophomore Irina López joined Stolte and Nichols in setting a 6k personal best, finishing 56th overall in 22:49.90. López shaved nearly two minutes off her previous 6k personal best, set at last season's Bill Dellinger Invitational. Her fourth-place finish within the Vikings' lineup also represented a new seasonal best in terms of finish.

Freshman Libby Fox closed out the team score with a 68th overall finish, running her first 6k in 23:14.70. Fellow freshmen Sonja Jones and Riley Amarillas followed at 82nd and 93rd overall in 23:30.60 and 24:18.80, respectively.

Emily Schmitke (99th, 24:52.40), Hannah Butterfield (112th, 25:51.00) and Talise Wapsheli (125th, 28:24.40) also competed for the Vikings.

Ibrahim led a youthful lineup for the Viking men that featured four freshmen among the team's top five finishers. All four of those freshmen were running their first collegiate 8k Saturday. The only sophomore in the Vikings' top five, Luke Gillingham, hadn't run an 8k yet, either.

The Vikings had built up to the 8k with a 5k at the Lewis & Clark Opener and 6k at the Ash Creek Festival to open the season. But the Vikings still didn't know what they had until Saturday.

Ibrahim provided some familiarity at the top of the lineup with his last name. The brother of recent Viking alum Abdi Ibrahim, who led the Vikings at every meet last season, Farhan did the family name proud with his 33rd overall finish in 25:01.90.

Ari Smith and Gillingham followed at 50th and 51st overall, respectively, in times of 25:28.30 and 25:29.20.

JD Arthur was the lone freshman who had run an 8k in high school but way back in 2022. Arthur crushed that time with his finish in 25:46.70, placing him 59th overall.

Fellow freshman Vince Estrada closed out the team score for the Viking men, placing 78th overall in 26:26.30.

Mika Sarver Huber set an 8k personal best by more than 50 seconds, beating his time at last year's Charles Bowles Invitational while placing 94th overall in 26:52.80.

Senior Tom Thake followed in 27:04.00, placing 99th overall.

Junior Lyness Ota shaved four seconds off his previous best in the 8k, finishing 104th overall in 27:20.20.

Freshman Jorge Garcia finished his first 8k in 27:31.40, placing 110th overall.

Returners Landen Sandoval (112th, 27:34.80), Amir Ahmed (115th, 27:42.40) and Simon Walsh (147th, 29:56.00) rounded out the Viking men's runners at Saturday's meet.

The Vikings race again next Saturday at the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem. The men race another 8k at 9:30 a.m., while the women run a 5k at 10:20 a.m.
