Strong Second Round Is Best Of Vikings Season... So Far

Spokane, WA – Portland State bounced back from a slow start at the Kalispel Invitational, improving by 16 strokes from round one to round two on Monday. The Vikings are currently in 11th place among 14 teams competing with 314-297=611 at Kalispel Golf and Country Club.
 
The tournament, hosted by Eastern Washington, will conclude with a third round on Tuesday. Santa Clara leads after 36 holes with 295-284=579. Gonzaga is in second place, posting 288-297=585.
 
Every member of the Vikings team improved by at least two shots from the first round to the second round as they posted the best round among five played so far this season. The 298 total also matches the best round shot by PSU last season.
 
Junior Cynthia Valerie Ong was the top Viking after two rounds. Ong shot 77-73=150 and is currently tied for 28th.
 
Sophomore Maddie Dustin is one stroke behind Ong, tied for 33rd, with 77-74=151. Both Dustin and Ong had five birdies during their two rounds.
 
Freshman Caithlyn Ong – sister of Cynthia – carded 79-76=155. She is tied for 48th among 82 players.
 
Making the biggest improvement from round one to round two was senior Bayler Brundage. After an uncharacteristic 83 to open in the morning, Brundage bounced back with 75 in her afternoon round and is tied for 58th at 158.
 
Francesca Tomp, a freshman, posted 81-79=160 and is tied for 63rd.
 
Leading after round one is Grace Lee of Gonzaga. She has a four-shot advantage with a six-under par 67-71=138. Santa Clara's Kelsey Kim is second with 72-70=142.
