Idaho Knocks Vikings Out At Big Sky Tennis Championship

Phoenix, AZ – The score doesn't reflect it, but the Portland State Vikings gave all Idaho all it wanted in a quarterfinal round match at the Big Sky Conference Tennis Championship before losing 4-0 at Phoenix Tennis Center.

The Vikings took four singles matches to three sets but three of them were left unfinished as the Vandals reached a decisive four points. At one point, midway through singles, the Vikings led in two matches, were even in two and trailed in two.

Idaho (15-5) advances to a Big Sky Tennis semifinal tomorrow against Sacramento State (19-3). The Vikings season ends at 5-11 overall.

Idaho beat the Vikings in doubles play, winning at number one and number three by matching 6-2 scores. The number-two doubles match went unfinished with Freshmen Nene Uemura and Ayra Salim trailing just 4-3. That gave the Vandals their first point.

Idaho then had two-set wins at number-three and number-five singles. Finally, Annabel Davis of Idaho pulled out a highly-competitive match with Vikings' freshman Hana Abdelhamid, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. That secured the fourth point and a team victory for the Vandals, leaving the other matches unfinished.

Also highly competitive was the Vikings' only senior Nika Beukers at number one singles. Beukers lost the opening set, 6-2, to Idaho's Diana Khaydarshina, but roared back to sweep set number two, 6-0. The final set went unfinished.

Freshman Kasumi Hirayama at number four and sophomore Scarlett Perkins at number six took their matches to a third set as well before they went unfinished.

After a year away, the Vikings made their return to the Big Sky Championship under first-year Head Coach Josiah Peterson. The top six teams in the Big Sky qualify for the tournament each season. This was PSU's fourth trip to the tournament in the past five seasons and seventh overall.

The Vikings featured one senior, one sophomore and four freshmen on their roster this season.
