Vikings Sweep Chaminade, 7-0, For Non-Conference Road Win

Box Score Honolulu, HI – The Portland State Women's Tennis Team took advantage of a late addition to their schedule, sweeping Chaminade University, 7-0, at the Pearl Harbor-Hickam Air Base.

The Vikings added the Division II opponent to their schedule on Friday to fill a two-week open gap. They also benefited from playing outdoors to aid a potential appearance in the Big Sky Conference Championship in Phoenix in late April.

Doubles partners Nika Beukers and Kasumi Hirayama took the win at number-one, 6-0. They were followed by a win at number-two doubles from Ayra Salim and Nene Uemura, 6-1. Chaminade forfeited the number-three doubles match and the Vikings had an easy 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

The Vikings took five matches in singles as the Silverswords also forfeited at number-six singles. Beukers won at number one, 6-1, 6-1, over Kylie Ye. Hana Abdelhamid took the number-two singles win, 6-0, 6-1, over Kirra Carvalho.

Uemura won at number-three, 6-1, 6-0, against Isabella Minaudo. Hirayama won at number-four by the same score, 6-1, 6-0, over Selena Buttery. And Salim took every game in her 6-0, 6-0 win against Danica Palmer.

"I have to thank the Chaminade team and coach, Ty Aki, for having us," said Vikings Coach Josiah Peterson. "This match has been one of the highlights of the season for us. With the girl's eyes set on the conference tournament we came here to prepare for the intense heat and slower conditions that come with playing outdoors.

"The transition to outdoors can be challenging, but each of the players focused on adapting and improving throughout the entire match. The response from the team has been great on this trip and it has been a blast seeing their individual drive combined with their team dedication."

PSU's win improved its season record to 5-7. The Vikings are 3-3 in the Big Sky Conference and currently in fifth place. Their next match is at home against Sacramento State (13-2, 4-0) on Apr. 7.
