PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by crosstown rival Portland on Saturday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
The Vikings dropped to 4-9 overall, while the Pilots improved to 6-4 on the season.
Portland was consistent throughout Saturday's match, beginning with a sweep in doubles play. Portland State altered its usual doubles lineup but the changes failed to pay off for the Vikings. Andrin Züellig and
Simon Kuszynski competed at No. 1 but were defeated by Maxim Groysman and Stefan Skobelev, 6-3. At No. 2,
Hayden Elliott and
Hubert Theriault lost to Nikola Keremedchiev and Cade Fernando, 6-2. Freshmen
Luca Prino and
Edoardo Cravanzola teamed up at No. 3 but fell to Tom Garcia and Lucas Kimelman, 6-2.
The Pilots continued their strong performance in singles play, securing six straight-set victories to clinch the sweep. Both Kuszynski and Theriault pushed their Pilot opponents to tiebreakers, but ultimately couldn't secure a set win. Theriault was edged by Skobelev, 6-2, 7-6 (2) at No. 3, while Kuszynski lost to Fernando, 7-6 (6), 6-3, at No. 6.
The Vikings will return to conference play in two weekends, heading to Montana for a two-match road trip. They will face Montana on Saturday, March 29, at 9:30 AM PT, and Montana State on Sunday, March 30, at 9:00 AM PT.
