OPENING TIP
Portland State will conclude its non-conference schedule this week with a challenging road trip through two time zones, facing Colorado (9-1) and Tulane (7-4).

PSU goes into the week at 6-3 and is guaranteed a winning non-conference record for the third straight season. PSU has won five of its last six games and is 2-2 on the road.

The Vikings come off an easy 94-50 victory over George Fox at home on Saturday. It was an expected win over a Division III opponent, but the Vikings made sure to turn in a strong performance in every category, shooting .528 from the field with a mere six turnovers, out-rebounding the Bruins, 45-30, and holding them to .308 shooting and forcing 16 turnovers.

JR F Terri Miller Jr. had a marquee game with a career-high 31 points (14-20 FG, 1-1 3-pt, 2-2 FT), nine rebounds, six assists and two steals. He leads the Vikings in scoring this season at 17.5 points per game, while also averaging 7.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and shooting .560 from the field. Miller is top five in the Big Sky Conference in scoring, rebounding and shooting.

PSU has also been buoyed by the play of SR G Jaylin Henderson, who averages 17.0 points, has made 20 steals and leads the Big Sky in assists at 6.4 per game. SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott is averaging 11.1 points and is second in the league in rebounding at 8.3 per game while shooting .595 from the field.

Those three will need to be at their best against a very talented Colorado team that won eight straight games to open the season. The Buffaloes are 7-0 at home and have a dynamic scoring team. Five players average in double figures as the team scores more than 88 points per outing. Colorado shoots .518 from the field and .408 from three-point range.

Portland State and Colorado have never met in basketball. The game takes place Wednesday night at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT at CU Events Center. It can be seen on ESPN+.

COMING UP

Non-conference play concludes with a game at Tulane this Saturday. Tip-off is 6:30 p.m. CT/4:30 p.m. PT. The Big Sky Conference schedule begins on Jan. 1 at Weber State.

GAME NOTES: PORTLAND STATE vs. COLORADO

  • ALL-TIME SERIES: Portland State and Colorado have never met on the basketball court.
  • PORTLAND STATE vs. THE BIG 12: A Portland State matchup with a Big 12 opponent is fairly rare. The Vikings are 2-13 all-time against current members of the Big 12. It should be noted that the two wins came over Arizona State (2-4) when it was a member of the Pac-10 (not 12) in the early 2000s... other opponents have been Iowa State, Houston, Baylor, BYU, Arizona, West Virginia, Kansas and Kansas State. The only one of those opponents Vikings Coach Jase Coburn has faced is West Virginia (2022).
  • COACHES: Vikings Coach Jase Coburn (Arizona State, 2006) is in his fifth season as Head Coach. He spent eight previous seasons on the Park Blocks as an Assistant and Associate Head Coach. Coburn's overall record is 68-67. He has never faced Colorado... the Buffaloes are coached by Tad Boyle (Kansas, 1985) in his 16th season. Boyle has a 321-205 career record. In 20 seasons as a Head Coach, Boyle is 377-271. Previously the head coach at Northern Colorado (2006-10), Boyle was 1-7 against the Vikings.

SCOUTING THE BUFFALOES
  • Colorado is a member of the Big 12 Conference located in Boulder, CO. The Buffaloes were 14-21 last season, 3-17 and 16th in the Big 12.
  • This season the Buffaloes have jumped out to a 9-1 record. That includes wins over Big Sky Conference schools Montana State and Eastern Washington... the Buffaloes average 88.4 points per game and allow 77.0 points. They shoot .518 from the field, .408 from three-point range and .734 at the free throw line... Colorado also has an impressive rebounding margin over opponents of +6.6.
  • Freshman guard Isaiah Johnson leads five scorers in double figures at 14.7 points per game. He shoots .562 from the field and .483 from three-point range... sophomore forward Sebastian Rancik averages 13.2 points and 5.7 rebounds... junior center Bangot Dak leads the team with 6.8 rebounds and 18 blocked shots... junior guard Barrington Hargress is averaging 12.5 points and a team-leading 4.7 assists.

HOT SHOTS
  • JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT: Over the last six games, SR F Terri Miller Jr.  is averaging 20.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, shooting .628 from the field, .533 from three-point range and .727 at the line... Miller put up a career-high 31 points (14-20 FG, 1-1 3-pt, 2-2 FT) with nine rebounds and six assists in the win over George Fox... he had 26 points and 11 rebounds in a win at South Dakota... for the season, he averages 17.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and shoots .560/.458/.739.
  • HENDERSON'S HELPERS: SR G Jaylin Henderson has done it all for the Vikings this season. Against South Dakota, Henderson set a new career high for assists with 11. It was the third time this season he has established a new career mark in that category... Henderson leads the Big Sky Conference in assists (6.4) while averaging 17.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals.
  • ANOTHER MEANINGLESS 6-7 REFERENCE: I don't know what it means either, but SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott has made peace with the cultural phenomenon of 6-7. How?... He has 67 career blocked shots and 67 career dunks at Portland State in 57 career games... on a more important note, Minott ranks second in Portland State history in field goal percentage at .623 for his career. He is starting to see his percentage climb again this season (all those dunks help). TV is shooting .595 from the field, including 11-14 in his last two games (.786).
  • CHUCK IS NOT A CHUCKER: George Constanza made it clear his dislike for "chuckers" on the basketball court in an episode of Seinfeld. That said, he would love JR F Charles Chukwu. So far, Chukwu is 12-13 from the field this season (.923). Throw in his 30-game career at Tulsa a couple of seasons ago and Chukwu is a remarkable 28-36 from the field (.778) as a Division I player.
  • CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARDS: Portland State has been dominant on the boards this season.  The Vikings have out-rebounded opponents by an average of 7.9 per game, which ranks second in the Big Sky. The Vikings lead the Big Sky in offensive rebounding (13.7 pg)... SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott ranks second in the Big Sky with 8.2 rebounds per game. JR G Keyon Kensie Jr. ranks fourth at 7.4 per game. And SR F Terri Miller Jr. is fifth with 7.1 rebounds per game.
  • MORE GOOD STUFF THAT DOESN'T FIT ANYWHERE ELSE: Portland State leads the Big Sky Conference in offensive rebounds (13.7), turnovers forced (14.7) and field goal percentage defense (.406)... in the last five games PSU has held opponents to .370 shooting (105-284) and 61.0 points.
  • TRIVIA IS OUR NAME: Portland State Basketball recorded its 900th all-time win against George Fox. PSU is 900-872 in official games in 65 seasons as a collegiate program.

NOT SO HOT
  • DEEP THOUGHTS: Despite winning four of the last five games, the Vikings have seen a precipitous dip in their three-point efficiency. In the first four games of the season, PSU was 40-99 from three-point range (10.0/.404). In the last five games, the Vikings are 31-120 (6.2/.258).

NON-CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Head Coach Jase Coburn's team is assured of a third-straight winning record in non-conference play during his tenure. The Vikings are 31-25 against non-conference opponents under Coburn, 23-12 in the past three years.

2021-22: 2-6
2022-23: 6-7
2023-24: 9-4
2024-25: 8-5
2025-26: 6-3
