Vikings Post Best Score In Seven Seasons, Finish Second At Sun Mountain Intercollegiate

Missoula, MT – Portland State Golf wrapped up its fall season on a high note, placing second at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate, hosted by Montana at The Ranch Club. It was PSU's best team finish in six years and featured top-10 individual results from Payten Shimizu and Cynthia Valerie Ong.

The Vikings entered the final round of the 54-hole event just one stroke behind leader Weber State. The Wildcats surged in the final round, posting a tournament-best 290, while the Vikings came in at 295. PSU outlasted Idaho in a battle for second place. The teams flipped back and forth between second and third most of the round before the Vikings wrapped up second by a single stroke on the final hole.

PSU shot 294-297-295=886 overall. It was the best tournament score by a Viking team since the 2018 Big Sky Championship. Weber State came in at 294-296-290=880. Idaho was third with 297-295-295=887.

Weber State's Braylyn Bayer captured the individual title after carding a three-under par 69 in the final round. Bayer shot a two-under par total of 73-72-69=214.

Shimizu, a Viking senior, entered the final round tied for second and finished alone in fifth place. It was the first top-10 of her career as she posted 74-70-74=218. That also matched her career-low tournament score as a Viking.

Ong earned a top-10 as well, tying for seventh among 41 golfers at 72-75-73=220, the third-best score of her three-year career.

Junior Momo Udom also matched her career-best tournament score as a Viking. Udom tied for 15th with 73-76-75=224.

Bayler Brundage had her best tournament score of the fall. The Viking senior posted 75-76-77=228 to tie for 22nd place. Sophomore Maddie Dustin scored for the Vikings on Tuesday, matching Ong with a team-best one-over par 73. Dustin's 229 total was good for 26th place.
