Missoula, MT – The best day of golf in recent memory for the Portland State Vikings has them in contention for a tournament title at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate at The Ranch Club. PSU, with a 591 total after two rounds, trails leader Weber State (590) by just one stroke. Also in contention is Idaho, one stroke behind the Vikings, at 592.

On the individual side,
Payten Shimizu is also in contention for an individual title. The Viking senior posted rounds of 74-70=144, and at even-par is a single shot behind leader Emily Song of Weber State (72-71=143).

Portland State was tied for the lead with Weber State after the first round by posting a six-over par 294. It was the best Viking team score of the season, and in fact in three seasons.

Cynthia Valerie Ong shot an even-par 72 in round one, followed by a 73 from
Momo Udom. Shimizu started her first round six-over par after six holes, but then got hot. She made four birdies in a span of five holes and six birdies in all, finishing with a two-over par 74.
Bayler Brundage was the fourth scorer with a three-over par 75.

The Vikings' second-round 297 rates as the second-best round of the fall and left PSU at 591 total.

Shimizu stayed hot in the second round, making three birdies with just one bogey for her 70. She is tied for second place.

Ong, a junior, finished at 72-75=147 and is tied for ninth among 41 competitors. Udom, also a junior, is 13
th overall with 73-76=149.

Bayler Brundage had a solid day with rounds of 75-76=151 and is tied for 17
th. Sophomore
Maddie Dustin posted 78-78=156 and is in 30
th place.
