A highly-anticipated 2025-26 season begins for Portland State on Tuesday at Stanford as the Vikings take on the Cardinal in a non-conference game. PSU, picked to place second in the Big Sky Conference in the coming season, begins its preparation toward a first conference crown in more than 15 seasons with an 11-game non-conference slate.

PSU and Stanford will meet for the first time in seven seasons and for the fourth time at Maples Pavilion in five all-time meetings. Game time for the contest is 7 p.m. and it will be televised on ACC Network Extra.

The Vikings, led by fifth-year Head Coach Jase Coburn, return five letterwinners, two redshirts and have added 10 newcomers to their roster. PSU was 19-13 last season, 11-7 and third in the Big Sky Conference. It was PSU's best record in eight seasons and best winning percentage since a last Big Sky title in 2008-09 (23-10).

Second team All-Big Sky selection Terri Miller Jr., Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year Tre-Vaughn Minott, and honorable mention All-Big Sky choice Jaylin Henderson are the returning starters for PSU. All three were named Preseason All-Big Sky Conference for 2025-26.

Stanford comes off a season in which it won its most games in 10 years (21-14) and made an NIT appearance. Second-year Head Coach Kyle Smith returns two starters and nine letterwinners from that roster.

COMING UP
After facing Stanford, the Vikings will play three of their next four games at Viking Pavilion. PSU hosts Northwest Indian College on Nov. 7, travels to San Francisco for a Nov. 15 game, then plays at home against Bakersfield (Nov. 17) and Evergreen State (Nov. 19).

The Vikings play 11 non-conference games with five at home and six on the road.

GAME NOTES: PORTLAND STATE vs. STANFORD
  • ALL-TIME SERIES: Stanford leads the all-time series, 3-1, including three wins in Maples Pavilion... the Vikings' lone win in the series came in 2017-18, an 87-78 victory at Memorial Coliseum in Portland during the PK80 Tournament... the most recent meeting was a 79-67 Stanford win at Stanford during the 2018-19 season.
  • WHO IS IN THAT LEAGUE?: It is hard to get used to the idea of Stanford being a member of the ACC, but here we are... college athletics in 2025. The only other current members of the 18-team ACC that the Vikings have ever played are Duke (twice), Cal (twice) and SMU (once). And only Duke was a member of the ACC at the time of the game.
  • COACHES: Vikings Coach Jase Coburn (Arizona State, 2006) is in his fifth season as Head Coach. He spent eight previous seasons on the Park Blocks as an Assistant and Associate Head Coach. Coburn's overall record is 62-64. He has never faced Stanford... the Cardinal are coached by Kyle Smith (Hamilton College, 1992) in his second season. Smith is 21-14 with Stanford. Now in his 16th season as a collegiate head coach, he is 279-207 overall. Smith is 2-1 all-time against PSU with two wins while at Washington State and one loss while at San Francisco.

SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
  • A long-time member of the Pac-12 Conference, Stanford now is a member of the ACC. Last year, the Cardinal was 21-14 overall, 11-9 and seventh place in the ACC. Stanford won an NCAA Basketball Championship in 1942.
  • The Cardinal were 17-3 last season at home, including 9-1 in the ACC.
  • Stanford returns two starters, nine letterwinners and 11 program members among its 17-player roster. With 52% of its minutes played returning, Stanford has the most in the ACC.
  • Junior guard Ryan Agarwal is the top returning player, averaging 7.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists last season.

VIKINGS PICKED SECOND IN PRESEASON BIG SKY POLLS
Big Sky Conference pollsters have a consensus, at least in terms of the top four teams in the league, and the Portland State Vikings are vital among them. PSU was picked to finish second in both the Big Sky Coaches and Media Polls. The Vikings trail Montana, the defending Big Sky Champion, in both polls.

PSU's placement in the polls is its best since being picked to win the league back in 2009 (and the Vikings did so by winning the Big Sky Tournament that year). Certainly, that prediction is based on Portland State's strong 2024-25 season (19-13 overall, 11-7 and third place in the Big Sky) and its strong returning core of players as fifth-year Head Coach Jase Coburn figures to have his best team yet.

In the Coaches Poll, Montana received six first-place votes, Portland State got three first-place votes, and Idaho had one first-place vote. The Griz had 78 polling points to 72 for the Vikings.

In the Media Poll, Montana received 21 of 35 first-place votes. The Vikings had nine top votes, while Northern Colorado and Idaho received two each and Sacramento State had one. PSU and Montana were clear favorites with the Griz getting 323 polling points to 302 for the Vikings.

In each poll, Northern Colorado placed third and Idaho placed fourth.

The Vikings high ranking is boosted by a returning team that includes three starters and a strong group of transfers. The Vikings will feature three league honorees from the 2024-25 season: senior forward Terri Miller Jr. (second team All-Big Sky Conference, 12.1 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.0 apg, 52% FG); senior guard Jaylin Henderson (honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference, 13.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 56 3-pt FG); and senior center Tre-Vaughn Minott (Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year, 7.6 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 54 blocked shots, 67% FG%).

Portland State also led the Big Sky in scoring defense (65.8), field goal percentage defense (.419), three-point defense (.274), turnovers forced (13.1), steals (7.4) and blocked shots (4.4) in league games.

In addition to being picked second in the Big Sky, Portland State is among those receiving votes in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 (31st).

MILLER, HENDERSON, MINOTT COMPRISE HALF OF ALL-BIG SKY TEAM
Portland State Basketball's "big three" returning starters made a big impact around the Big Sky Conference last season and have been selected to the 2025-26 preseason All-League team. Seniors Terri Miller Jr., Jaylin Henderson and Tre-Vaughn Minott composed half of the six-member team, voted on by coaches and media.

Miller, a 6-8 forward from Fresno, CA, will begin his second season as a Viking. He averaged 12.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, had a team-high 50 steals and shot .515 from the field last season, earning second team All-Big Sky Conference honors. Miller was even better in league play with averages of 14.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and .523 shooting.

Henderson, a 6-3 guard from Wichita, KS, will also be in his second season as a Viking. Henderson led the team in scoring at 13.0 points per game and three-point field goals with 56. He also averaged 3.8 rebounds, had 55 assists, 41 steals and a highlight reel of dunks. Henderson was named honorable mention All-Big Sky following the season.

Minott, a 6-10 center from Montreal, led the Vikings with 7.6 rebounds per game, 54 blocked shots and shot .669 from the field while averaging 7.6 points per game. He was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Year as the Vikings were the league's top defensive team. They led the Big Sky in scoring defense (65.8), field goal percentage defense (.419), three-point defense (.274), turnovers forced (13.1), steals (7.4) and blocked shots (4.4) in league games.

Other members of the All-Big Sky team include Money Williams of Montana, the Preseason Most Valuable Player; Andrew Cook of Eastern Washington; and Jack Payne of Idaho.

Vikings Game on Feb. 19 vs. idaho Added To ESPNU Television
ESPN has announced the addition of the Feb 19 Portland State Men's Basketball home game with Idaho to its national television schedule. The Vikings will host the Vandals in a Big Sky Conference game that evening at 6 p.m. PT on ESPNU.

The game, initially scheduled for an ESPN+ airing, will now be available on the ESPNU platform. The Vikings, picked to place second in the Big Sky this season in preseason polling, defeated the Vandals twice last year, but lost to them in the Big Sky Tournament. The Vandals were picked to place fourth in the Big Sky.

PSU games have been live streamed on ESPN+ in past seasons, but this will be the first nationally-televised basketball game at Viking Pavilion since it opened in 2018. PSU basketball has had one previous home game televised on ESPNU – a Feb. 21, 2009 contest with Boise State (and 93-81 Viking win). That game aired from the old Stott Center gymnasium.

SEASON PREVIEW

TEAM NOTES
  • Head Coach Jase Coburn begins his fifth season leading the Vikings program. He was named Portland State's head basketball coach on April 16, 2021. Coburn is the 14th men's basketball coach in Portland State history and the seventh since PSU joined the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97... Coburn is in his 13th season at PSU after serving as an assistant coach then associate head coach (2013-21)... Coburn's contract runs through the 2027-28 season.
  • The Vikings come off a 19-13 season in 2024-25, their best record since going 20-14 in 2017-18. It was their best winning percentage (.594) since 2008-09... the 11-7 Big Sky Conference record and third-place finish was the best (.611) since going 10-6 in 2011-12 (.625).
  • PSU has seven players returning from the 2024-25 season, five letterwinners and a pair of redshirts... the roster should be based around three returning starters: SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott (6-10, 7.6 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.78 bpg, 67% FG), the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Year; SR F Terri Miller Jr. (6-8, 12.1 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.6 spg, 52% FG), a second team All-Big Sky Conference selection; and SR G Jaylin Henderson (6-3, 13.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 56 3-pt FG), an honorable mention All-Big Sky honoree... also back is SO G Kelcy Phipps (6-2, 9.7 mpg, 2.1 ppg) and SR F Isaac Brice (6-7, 1.7 ppg, 60% FG)... the Vikings will incorporate a pair of perimeter-playing redshirts in JR Sebastian Tidor (6-5) and FR Alex Dupre (6-5).
  • Among Portland State's newcomers are five Division I transfers, two Division II transfers and three freshmen... the Vikings will look for long-range shooting from SR TR G Brycen Long (6-2, Arizona State), a player who made 94 three-point field goals at Houston Christian in 2022-23... SR TR G Mozae Downing-Rivers (6-6, Missouri State) brings play-making ability with tremendous size... JR TR G Keyon Kensie Jr. (6-8, San Diego) also has excellent size and athleticism as a perimeter player and ability to score from all over the court... the Vikings also added three forwards in FR Braydon Barron (6-6, All-State at Barlow (OR) HS), JR Charles Chukwu (6-9, Arkansas Little Rock) and SR Isaiah Williams (6-7, Academy of Art). Chukwu brings size and Division I experience, while Williams was an all-around talent at Art U. Barron represents the future but has the physical maturity to play right away... the Vikings also got deeper inside with the addition of SO TR C Kean Webb (6-11, San Diego). A teammate of Kensie at San Diego, Webb has three years of eligibility and will be one of the biggest players in the Big Sky Conference... local FR G Colt Ness (6-0, Tigard (OR) HS), FR C Matthew Beatty (6-10, Roosevelt HS) and SR G Samuel Stewart IV (6-4, George Fox University) are walk-ons to the program.
  • SR G Jaylin Henderson ranked 13th in scoring (13.0) and eighth in three-point field goals (56) in 2024-25... SR F Terri Miller Jr. was 16th in scoring (12.1), but ninth in league games (14.6), and 10th in rebounding (5.5)... SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott ranked third in rebounding (7.6) and second in blocked shots (1.7). His .669 field goal percentage was just .002 off the PSU school record held by Julius Thomas (.671).
  • In 2024-25, Portland State led the Big Sky Conference in scoring defense (65.8), field goal percentage defense (.419), three-point defense (.274), turnovers forced (13.1), steals (7.4) and blocked shots (4.4) in league games.
  • With 62 career blocked shots, SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott already ranks in the Portland State top 10 (t8th). He is sixth in career dunks (47).
  • PSU gained additional years of eligibility for SR F Terri Miller Jr. and SR G Jaylin Henderson due to their previous stints at the junior college level... SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott was also granted an additional year of eligibility by the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee on Sept. 3 due mainly to playing only 19 minutes during the 2022-23 season at South Carolina.

FUN FACTS, MEANINGLESS TRIVIA
  • DUNK YOU VERY MUCH: The Vikings had 123 dunks on the season, smashing the school record of 84, set in 2018-19. SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott led the team with a school-record 44 while Jaylin Henderson had 32... Minott had a school-record five dunks against Idaho on Jan. 11.
  • STUDENT-ATHLETES: Portland State earned the NABC Academic Excellence Award for team GPA (3.17) last season... the Vikings had four players named to the NABC Honors Court: Jaylin Henderson, Qiant Myers, Sebastian Tidor, and Terri Miller Jr...  five Vikings earned Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors: Henderson, Myers and Miller, as well as Kelcy Phipps and Hayden Curtiss.
  • TWO HANDS ARE BETTER THAN ONE: SR F Terri Miller Jr. is ambidextrous and will shoot with both hands during a game. He tends to shoot right-handed from distance and left-handed when playing inside. He said he doesn't think about the hand he shoots with, it just occurs naturally.
  • I WANT MY MTV: There is no one more musical than "TV", the Vikings own SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott. He can play seven musical instruments and also enjoys producing music. His mixes can be found on YouTube at Tellavision_topic... Minott is also the long-time boyfriend of Aliyah Boston of the Indiana Fever (they met at South Carolina).
  • HE CAN ALMOST FLY: SR G Jaylin Henderson has a 47-inch vertical leap.
  • CONNECTIONS: SR G Jaylin Henderson and SR F Terri Miller Jr. were teammates at Louisiana Tech in 2023-24... SR F Isaac Brice is the son of a former Vikings assistant football coach, Alundis Brice (2007-08).
  • THAT WINNING FEELING: Head Coach Jase Coburn has a 25-22 record in non-conference games in his four years at the helm of the Viking Ship. That includes a respectable 11-15 road record in those games... PSU is 17-9 in non-conference play the last two seasons... Coburn ranks eighth in career wins at Portland State (62) among 14 all-time coaches. Among Big Sky schools, he has had the most success against Northern Arizona (7-1) and Idaho (7-2) and the least success against Eastern Washington (1-7).
  • THERE IS A FIRST FOR EVERYTHING: Portland State's Feb. 19 game against Idaho will be televised on ESPNU.
