SEATTLE, Wash. — All any track & field coach can ask of their athletes is to get better with each meet they compete in. Portland State track & field coaches have that in
Noah Meucci, who led a group of three Vikings to top 10 marks Friday on the first day of the UW Invitational.
Â
Meucci became just the fourth Viking to crack 50 feet in the weight throw. He did it on his very first attempt of the day, throwing 51-01.50 (15.58m). He improved that to 51-09.00 (15.77m) on his second attempt, which eventually placed him second in his flight and tied for 10th overall.
Â
The mark follows a string of improvements for Meucci in the weight throw this season. He's bettered his mark at four of the five meets he's competed at this season. That started with a mark of 48-09.50 (14.87m) at the PSU vs. UP Dual Meet in November. He improved that to 49-00.75 (14.95m) two weeks ago at the UW Preview. He then cracked 15 meters for the first time a week ago at the Portland Indoor 1 with a throw of 49-11.00 (15.21m).
Â
Meucci remains fourth all-time in the weight throw at Portland State, though the gap between him and the top three throwers has shrunk significantly with his recent improvements.
Â
Personal bests were the theme of the day for the Vikings at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor facility.
Â
Abdi Ibrahim shaved a second off his personal best in the men's 3,000 meters, finishing in 8:20.73 while placing third in his heat. Ibrahim came into the day ranked ninth all-time but jumped three spots to sixth with his time Friday. Ibrahim's name peppers the Portland State record book. Besides the top 10 mark in the 3k, he owns five others, including the school record in the cross country 6k.
Â
The Vikings also got a top 10 mark out of their first attempt of the season in the women's distance medley relay.
Irene Montoliu Tio,
Wendy Hare, Irina López and
Ania Kapustka ran the four legs of the DMR, finishing in 12:07.26. That moved them up to third all-time in the event. It's been rare for the Vikings to crack the top 10 in the DMR, as Friday's foursome was only the third team to do so since 2016.
Â
Fellow distance runner
Emma Stolte nearly gave the Vikings a fourth top 10 mark Friday. She shaved nearly five and a half seconds off her personal best in the 3,000 meters while finishing in 9:57.23. That put her less than three seconds off the current No. 10 time, which Sarah Medved set at 9:54.42 in 2018.
Â
The Vikings also got a number of indoor or overall bests from the women's and men's 200 meters. Five of six Viking women set indoor or overall bests in the 200, while three of seven men did so as well.
Â
Tori Forst led the Viking women in the 200, finishing second in her heat and tied for sixth overall in a time of 25.14 seconds. That marked a new indoor best for Forst by six-tenths of a second, while also coming within three-tenths of a second of her outdoor best of 24.85 seconds from 2023.
Â
Ashley Peterson ran in the same heat as Forst and finished in 26.55 seconds, setting an indoor best for her by nearly half a second. Peterson finished just .14 seconds of her outdoor best from last year's Big Sky Championships.
Â
Ocean Rideout set an overall best with her finish in 27.08 seconds. That was nearly half a second under the overall best she set just last week, when she finished in 27.55 seconds at the Portland Indoor 1.
Sienna Rosario and
Olivia Jolivette added two more indoor bests with their finishes in 27.12 and 27.37 seconds, respectively.
Â
Dillon Brost led the Vikings on the men's side, setting an indoor best by nearly four-tenths of a second with his finish in 22.79 seconds.
Micah Avery – a PSU football player – followed in 22.97 seconds, which was just off his time of 22.95 seconds from the UW Preview on Jan. 17.
Â
Tommie Olubisi finished in 23.00 seconds, shaving more than three-quarters of a second off his debut time from the PSU vs. UP Dual Meet back in November.
Jojo Clark Anderson shaved a tenth of a second off his indoor best with his finish in 23.21 seconds.
Â
Elsewhere on the track,
James Timmins shaved nearly a tenth of a second off his previous time in the 60-meter hurdles with his finish in 8.91 seconds. Neither he, nor
Aidan Sweeney (8.80) advanced to the finals of the event, however, nor did
Naia Olivier (11.12) on the women's side.
Â
In the field,
Jackson Mathers added nearly two inches to his indoor best in the high jump, clearing 5-10.50 (1.79m).
Riley Sharps bettered his mark in the triple jump by 9.5 inches with a jump of 41-11.25 (12.78m). It was a clutch performance from Sharps, who fouled on his first two attempts before setting his new indoor best on his third and final attempt of the day.
Â
The Vikings also saw
Sav Garcia complete the program's first pentathlon since Hare in 2023. Garcia no-heighted in the high jump, the second event of the five, but still soldiered on to post a score of 2,192 points. Garcia's best events came in the shot put and 800 meters. Her mark of 32-08.50 (9.97m) in the shot put stands as the ninth-best mark in a pentathlon shot put in school history. Meanwhile, her time of 2:32.66 in the 800 meters scored her 660 points (her top mark of the day) and tied the No. 7 mark all-time in the pentathlon 800 meters.
Â
The Vikings continue at the meet Saturday, starting with the women's weight throw and women's long jump at 10 a.m. Track events get underway at 10:20 a.m. with the prelims of the women's 60 meters.
