PORTLAND, Ore. — Like a student who can't wait to show off their summer glow up when they return to school, the Portland State cross country and track & field announced the addition of 36 newcomers, as well as two returning redshirts, Thursday.
Â
Those newcomers have already bolstered the Vikings' men's and women's cross country rosters this fall, and will continue to do so as the track & field athletes return to campus for the start of classes next week.
Â
Not only will the 36 newcomers (14 women, 22 men) bolster the Vikings' numbers, they'll also push the Vikings into more events than they've competed in over the past several years. Out of the 14 newcomers on the women's side, six will compete in the sprints/jumps, five in the mid- or long distances, two in the hurdles and one in the multi-events. On the men's side, out of their 22 newcomers and two returning redshirts, the Vikings will have 10 athletes competing in the mid- or long distances, six in the sprints/jumps, four in the hurdles, three in the throws and one in the multi-events.
Â
"I am very excited to welcome so many track & field/cross country newcomers to the Park Blocks," Portland State head coach
Jonathan Marcus said of the newcomers. "We are so fortunate to have such a well-balanced and talented group of student-athletes join the Viking athletics family. My staff and I are looking forward to working with this group and watching them grow into champions."
