PORTLAND, Ore. — If Hayward Field, home of the Ducks, brought the rain last week, then will Hanson Stadium bring an impromptu performance of
MMMBop this Saturday at the Pacific Open?
Â
Both stadiums would be true to their names and/or home mascots if that were the case. It's not likely to matter either way for the Portland State track & field program, which continued to show steady improvement last week despite the rain at Hayward.
Â
Eleven Vikings shook off the poor conditions to set either personal or seasonal bests last week at the Oregon Preview. Among those were top 10 marks/improvements for
Alison Calvin-Stupfel and
Noah Meucci. They were the lone Vikings competing last Friday, with Calvin-Stupfel moving into a tie for ninth all-time in the women's high jump while Meucci added an inch to his No. 8 mark in the men's hammer.
Â
The bulk of the improvements came last Saturday for the Vikings, with
Laura Beghin and
Dieumerci Migani leading the way. Beghin followed up a four-second personal best in the 1,500 meters a week earlier with a three-second improvement at the Oregon Preview. Beghin finished fifth overall in 4:33.94, the latest in a 2024 indoor and outdoor season full of personal bests.
Â
Migani, meanwhile, overcame a wet track and an outside lane assignment to run the fastest 100 meters by a Viking since 2016. Migani finished in 10.94 seconds, making him the first Viking to crack 11 seconds since Josh Pikes in 2018. No Viking has run faster than Migani in the 100 meters since Spenser Schmidt ran 10.59 while placing sixth in the finals of the event at the 2016 Big Sky Outdoor Championships.
Â
Migani will return to the 100 meters Saturday, alongside teammates
Aleks Braich,
Eman Kargbo,
Hunter Leeder,
GG Nitunga,
Tre Taylor and
Travis West.
Â
Migani and West are also entered in the men's triple jump, marking Migani's return to the event two weeks after he moved up to fourth all-time at PSU with a jump of 48-00.75 (14.65m) on his final attempt of the competition. That mark gave Migani a come-from-behind win at the Electric Forest Collegiate Open, where he swept the long jump and triple jump.
Â
Beghin, for her part, is entered in the women's 800 and 1,500 meters. She'll join
Taylor Nichols in the 1,500 meters, while
Ahmeah Brown,
Campbell Faust,
Ania Kapustka,
Dyllan Newville and Nichols are all entered alongside Beghin in the women's 800 meters.
Â
In addition to setting a 1,500-meter personal best at the Electric Forest Collegiate Open two weeks ago, Beghin came within 15-hundredths of a second off her 800-meter best at that meet, finishing in 2:18.27. If she were to set that mark Saturday, then she'd complete a clean sweep of her personal bests in 2024, having set times in all six indoor and outdoor track events at which she's competed for the Vikings.
Â
Other recent standout marks have included
Ashley Peterson inching closer and closer to cracking 60 seconds in the women's 400 meters. Peterson dropped her personal best to 1:00.35 at the Electric Forest Collegiate Open, then lowered that again to 1:00.21 while winning her heat at last week's Oregon Preview. She'll get another shot at cracking 60 seconds Saturday, as she's entered in the 400 alongside teammates
Elle Frazier,
Liv Frazier and
Mari Mendoza.
Â
Meucci will also return to the hammer Saturday. Appropriately, it'll be him and Calvin-Stupfel – the Vikings' two Friday entries last week – that open the meet for the Vikings again. Meucci will compete in the second flight of the men's hammer that starts at 9 a.m., while Calvin-Stupfel competes in the lone flight of the women's long jump.
Â
Meucci is also entered in the men's discus and shot put alongside teammates
Mikey LaGris and
Karch Kipp (shot put only).
Â
So, no matter the event, the Vikings will have teammates by their side…Brothers, in fact…Their Hanson (Stadium) brothers.
