Rainy Weather Can't Slow Vikings at Oregon Preview

RESULTS

EUGENE, Ore. —
If last week, the Portland State track & field proved that good weather could boost your performance, this Saturday, the Vikings showed that sometimes all you need is your own pure talent and will.

Despite a rainy day at the legendary Hayward Field, the Vikings still had a number of athletes set personal or seasonal bests while competing at the Oregon Preview. Laura Beghin and Dieumerci Migani led the way in that regard with a pair of eye-grabbing marks in the women's 1,500 and men's 100 meters, respectively.

Beghin shaved more than three seconds off her personal best in the 1,500 meters, just a week after she set a four-second personal best at the Electric Forest Collegiate Open. Beghin finished fifth overall in 4:33.94, putting her just over two seconds outside of the all-time top 10 at Portland State.

Taylor Nichols joined Beghin in the women's 1,500 meters and shaved 17 seconds off her season-opening time from last week while finishing in 4:57.86 Saturday.

Migani, meanwhile, led a group of five Vikings in the men's 100 meters with the fastest time by a PSU athlete in eight years. Despite running in the outside line and on a wet track, Migani finished 14th overall in 10.94 seconds. He became the first Viking to crack 11 seconds in the 100 meters since Josh Pikes ran 10.96 at the L&C Spring Break Open in 2018. No Viking has run faster than Migani in the 100 meters since Spenser Schmidt ran 10.59 while placing sixth in the finals of the event at the 2016 Big Sky Outdoor Championships.

GG Nitunga and Travis West followed Migani in 11.37 and 11.43 seconds, respectively. Tre Taylor finished his first 100-meter race as a Viking in 11.50 seconds. Hunter Leeder shaved three-hundredths of a second off the personal best he set a week ago while finishing in 11.65 seconds.

Outside of those two events, the Vikings also got a pair of personal bests from Ashley Peterson and Ahmeah Brown in the women's 400 meters. Peterson won her heat in 1:00.21, shaving 0.14 seconds off the personal best she set last week. Brown, meanwhile, finished in 1:02.30, shaving 2.75 seconds off the 400-meter best she set three weeks ago at the Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker.

Ania Kapustka and Campbell Faust added a pair of bests in the women's 800 meters. Kapustka shaved two seconds off the seasonal best she set last week while finishing in 2:22.38. Faust, meanwhile, finished in 2:26.48, shaving close to four seconds off her previous seasonal best and six-hundredths of a second off her personal best.

Outside of the personal and seasonal bests, Migani recorded a top-three finish in the men's long jump with a best jump of 22-06.25 (6.86m). The mark was five inches behind the seasonal best he set last week, but still gave him another high finish in a jumping event after he swept the long jump and triple jump at the Electric Forest Collegiate Open.

The Vikings have one more week of competition ahead of them in March. The exact location is still to be determined but will either see the Vikings compete at the Stanford Invitational, March 29-30, or the Pacific Open on March 30. Or both.

And no matter the weather at those meets, the Vikings know they have the ability to produce.
