Three Vikings Set Top 10 Marks as Field Events Take Center Stage at George Fox Indoor Meet #1

RESULTS

NEWBERG, Ore. —
The name for George Fox's indoor track & field facility is the rather pedestrian Multi-Use Facility. But the performances from the Portland State Vikings in attendance for Saturday's George Fox Indoor Meet #1 were anything but pedestrian.

Three Vikings set all-time top 10 marks at the meet between Noah Meucci (men's weight throw) Dieumerci Migani (men's long jump) and Carley Strand (women's pole vault). All three did so in field events, which were the focus of Saturday's meet outside of a few heats in the men's and women's 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles.

The top 10 marks for Meucci and Migani were their second of the season in their respective events. Both originally set top 10 marks while opening their seasons in the same events at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 13. Both bettered their marks from that meet, as Meucci moved up one spot to seventh in the weight throw while Migani jumped two spots to sixth all-time in the long jump.

Migani improved his mark on each of his last three attempts in the long jump Saturday, eventually topping out at 22-10.50 (6.97m) on his sixth and final attempt of the day. That was more than four inches farther than Migani's season opener at the UW Indoor Preview, and placed him second in Saturday's competition.

Migani also made the finals of the men's 60 meters Saturday where he finished fourth overall in 7.12 seconds. That matched the personal best he originally set at the UW Indoor Preview.

Meucci, meanwhile, set his top 10 mark on his first attempt of the day in the weight throw. Meucci opened with a mark of 44-00.75 (13.43m), nearly two feet farther than he threw at the UW Indoor Preview.

Meucci nearly added a second top 10 mark to his name, as he also bettered his season-opening mark in the shot put Saturday. Meucci finished with a best mark of 42-11.00 (13.08m), putting him just over three inches behind the No. 10 mark all-time at Portland State. Once again, the mark came on Meucci's first attempt of the day, and bettered his mark from the UW Indoor Preview by more than 14 inches.

Mikey LaGris also competed in the shot put, and matched Meucci by bettering his mark from the UW Indoor Preview. LaGris finished with a best throw of 35-02.00 (10.72m), just under five feet better than his season opener.

Strand was the new member of the Vikings' all-time top 10. She entered at No. 3 in the women's indoor pole vault after making her season debut Saturday. Strand came up clutch with a third-attempt clearance at 9-06.25 (2.90m), then cleared 10-00.00 (3.05m) on her first attempt.

The women's indoor pole vault has been one of the rarer events for the Vikings. Before Strand, only two other athletes had registered top 10 marks between Saraia Collmer, who ranks No. 1 at 11-07.25 (3.54m), and Krystal Saling, who ranks No. 2 at 11-04.00 (3.46m).

Outside of the top 10 marks, Alison Calvin-Stupfel improved on her season-opening mark in the high jump. She cleared 5-02.25 (1.58m) on her third attempt at the height, 1.25 inches higher than her clearance at the UW Indoor Preview.

Edward Niyongere competed on the men's side of the high jump and cleared 6-00.25 (1.84m) on his first attempt of the competition. It was Niyongere's first indoor high jump as a Viking.

Several of the Vikings competing Saturday will double back for the Portland Indoor Two Sunday. That meet will take place at the University of Portland's Chiles Center. That's not nearly as pedestrian of a name as Saturday's Multi-Use Facility, even if the meet name could use some work.

No matter. The fireworks should always come from the athletes rather than a meet or facility name. The Vikings fulfilled that Saturday.
