PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland State women's tennis head coach Kyle Russell announced the signings of Momoko Yoshimura and Scarlett Perkins on Wednesday. PSU will welcome the two for the 2023-24 season, a few months after the Vikings notched a 12-win season for just the second time in program history.Â
Yoshimura will use her fifth and final year of eligibility in the Rose City after two years at both Tyler Junior College and Louisiana Lafayette.Â
"What stands out about Momoko is her maturity on and off the court," Russell said. "She brings professionalism and a great work ethic to PSU. With four years of college tennis experience, I know she will hit the ground running and be a solid contributor for the Viks."
The Osaka, Japan native was part of the 2021 NJCAA National Championship team at Tyler Junior College, while individually finishing runner-up in both singles and doubles. In her first season at Louisiana in 2022, Yoshimura ranked second on the team with an 8-5 singles record, recording a perfect 5-0 record at the No. 5 spot. She racked up 13 doubles wins, including six at No. 1 in her two-year career with the Ragin' Cajuns.Â
Perkins, who will begin her collegiate career as a Viking in 2023-24, also signed a Letter of Intent this spring.Â
"Scarlett has a lot of upside," Russell said. "I'm excited to get her into our program and see where she can go. She has all the qualities we look for in our players. She will fit in seamlessly and will be an asset for years to come."
The freshman out of Marlow, England had a distinguished junior career, winning two junior ITF Championships in doubles, while finishing runner-up in singles.Â
