Vikings Set for Three-Match Week in Honolulu

PORTLAND, Ore. – Riding momentum from two straight wins, the Portland State women's tennis team will take a break from conference action this week as they head to Honolulu, Hawaii for three non-conference matches. The Vikings will open the week on Wednesday against Hawaii (5:30 p.m. PT), followed by Hawaii Pacific on Thursday (12 p.m. PT) and Chaminade on Friday (2 p.m. PT).

The Vikings are three wins away from their first ten-win season since 2014. They enter Wednesday's dual against the Rainbow Warriors with a 7-8 overall record (2-2 BSC).

Wednesday marks the Vikings' first road match since Feb. 12, after playing their last six matches at home. They went 3-3 during the six-match home stand, picking up wins over Idaho State, North Dakota and Sacramento State. The Vikings' most recent win was a crucial one, topping the Hornets 5-2 to improve to 2-2 in conference action.

Freshman Elizabeth Strongina was named the Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week on March 22 following a 4-0 week against North Dakota and Sacramento State. The Moscow, Russia native leads the Vikings with an 8-5 singles record and heads to Hawaii on a three-match win streak.

Playing strong at No. 1 singles, Masha Ponomareva has won three of her last four matches, beating opponents from Boise State, Idaho State and Sacramento State.

Portland State is 22-17 in doubles action, winning the opening point in four of its last five duals. Leading the conference in singles win percentage, No. 1 duo Ponomareva and Capu Sanoner are 6-0 entering the week.
