PORTLAND, Ore. – Seeking its first victory since Feb. 6, the Portland State women's tennis team will have a chance to do so against a conference opponent on Saturday as it opens its Big Sky slate against Idaho State at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center (11 a.m.).
After dropping their last three matches, the Vikings enter the weekend 4-6. Although they were outplayed in those matches, it wasn't by much. Two losses came against Mountain West opponents, Nevada and Boise State. Even with an injury-plagued lineup, the Vikings combined for five points over those two matches, falling to Nevada 4-3 and Boise State 5-2.
Winning five of her last six singles matches, Elizabeth Strongina leads PSU with a 5-3 record. Despite missing the last few matches due to injury, Makoto Ohara carries a 4-2 record, her last victory coming at the No. 5 spot against UC Riverside's Nikki Shahbazi on Feb. 6.
The Vikings head into conference action with a winning doubles record at 14-12. Emily Rees leads the Vikings with five individual doubles victories this season. The redshirt senior has 31 career doubles wins, just two victories shy of the all-time record (33).
