SEATTLE, Wash. — Saturday marked the Portland State track & field team's last trip to Seattle of the year. And as much as the regional rivalry between the two cities comes up whenever the Vikings travel up north, there might also be a touch of sadness behind this goodbye this time considering the marks the Vikings have put down in Seattle this season.
Two weeks ago, the Vikings set 10 all-time top 10 marks at the UW Invitational. Friday, it was eight top 10 marks on the first day of the Husky Classic. Saturday, the Vikings added three more. Four top 10 marks also came the UW Indoor Preview back on Jan. 14, giving the Vikings 25 total between their three different meets at the Dempsey Indoor Facility this season.
A familiar trio provided the three marks Saturday. The first one came from
Tatum Miller, who dipped under five minutes in the mile for the first time in her career to move up to eighth all time at the distance. Miller finished in 4:58.15, shaving four seconds off the time she ran two weeks earlier at the UW Invitational.
Miller was also part of the Vikings' record-breaking women's Distance Medley Relay, which set the record two weeks earlier at the UW Invitational. She also moved up to sixth all time in the 3k with her time of 9:46.37 last night.
The next top 10 mark came from
Bára Stýblová, who was running her first 800 as a Viking Saturday. Stýblová went with the early leader in her section of the race, and held on for a finish in 2:12.48. That's not a personal best for Stýblová, who ran 2:10.80 at the Czech Indoor Gala in 2020, but it still moves her up to third all time within the Portland State record book.
Like Miller, Stýblová was also part of the record-breaking DMR team, and has set several other top 10 marks this indoor season. After Saturday, Stýblová now ranks in the top 10 of the 800 (3rd), mile (4th) and 3k (7th).
Chase Lovercheck – someone who ranks in the indoor top 10 in the men's 400, 600, 800 and 1,000 meters – provided the final top 10 mark Saturday. The mark came as Lovercheck redeemed himself a bit in the 800 meters. A two-time All-Big Sky performer in the outdoor 800, Lovercheck ran a disappointing – by his standards – 1:56.09 last week at the WSU Open. This time around, Lovercheck was much sharper as he set an indoor best in the 800 with a finish in 1:52.78. That moves Lovercheck up to sixth all time at Portland State.
Alex Barbour nearly gave the Vikings another top 10 mark. She ran aggressively in her section of the mile, going with the leaders early. She was fourth at the bell, but couldn't make up the ground over the final lap and finished in 4:48.28. That's nearly identical to her time of 4:47.97 two weeks ago at the UW Invitational, which ranked her second all time in the indoor mile at Portland State.
Wendy Hare was also in action Saturday. She opened the day for the Vikings in the women's 400 meters in what was her fourth race of the weekend. Hare, who set personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles and 200 meters Friday, ran her first 400-meter race as a Viking, finishing in 58.24 seconds.
The Vikings now have a weekend off from competition coming up, before they head to the Big Sky Indoor Championships, Feb. 23-25, in Moscow, Idaho.
The way this season has gone, the Vikings might be thinking, if only conference were in Seattle…
