PORTLAND, Ore. — After two days in Idaho at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open, Sunday was reserved for some rust-busting for the Portland State track & field team. Twenty-eight Vikings competed at the Portland Indoor One at the Chiles Center Sunday, and all 28 of them were making their 2023 debuts.
Not only was everyone making their season debuts, but the majority of athletes were also running distances that were shorter than they'd typically run. That was purposeful, as Portland State head coach
David Hepburn wanted the mood light and fun while the majority of his team worked their way back into shape following their winter break.
Most of the team competed in the men's and women's mile. The Viking women dominated their side of the mile as they won three of the four heats in which they competed. Additionally, those three winners finished first, third and fourth overall in the mile.
Abi Swain led the group with an overall win in 5:04.79. Swain won their heat by close to four seconds while finishing close to two and a half seconds ahead of their personal best in the indoor mile. Swain's time put them just outside of the all-time top 10 in the mile at Portland State, as Jenny Rodgers holds the current No. 10 time at 5:04.15 from 2002.
Jamie Zamrin, meanwhile, placed third overall while winning the fifth heat of the mile in 5:11.32. Zamrin finished six seconds ahead of teammate
Peyten Woodruff, who finished in 5:17.39 in what was her first official race as a Viking.
Isa Swain (5:20.15) and
Abby Donde (5:43.51) placed third and fourth, respectively, behind Zamrin and Woodruff in the heat.
Aimee Mackenzie was the Viking women's other heat winner, as she won the fourth heat while finishing fourth overall in 5:14.41. Mackenzie could have potentially run even faster, but she won her heat by a whopping 15 seconds.
Outside of the heat winners,
Dyllan Newville posted the biggest personal best for the Vikings in the women's mile. Newville finished in 5:39.88, more than 36 seconds faster than her best time as a freshman last season.
The Viking men won two of their four heats in the men's mile.
Sam Lingwall won one of the two heats while placing second overall with a new personal best of 4:18.03. Lingwall edged University of Portland's Kevin Andrews by a tenth of a second to win his heat. His time of 4:18.03 was close to 10 seconds faster than Lingwall's previous best in the mile, which he set as a freshman in 2020.
Jake Schulte provided the other heat win for the Vikings, finishing close to seven seconds ahead of the No. 2 finisher in his heat with a time of 4:35.96. That's more than 12 seconds faster than Schulte's best time in the indoor mile last season.
Cam McChesney placed second in the opening heat of the men's mile while finishing fourth overall in 4:18.30.
Alex Solberg finished fourth in the opening heat and sixth overall in 4:19.85.
Paul Beaven also ran in the opening heat, finishing in 4:27.55, to better his prep best in the indoor mile by more than 33 seconds.
Outside of the mile, Emma Stotle,
Laura Beghin and
Campbell Faust competed in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:21.93, 2:26.59 and 2:30.30, respectively.
Zach Salcido and
Pat Roos ran on the men's side of the 800 meters, too, and finished in 2:02.30 and 2:08.15, respectively.
The rest of the Vikings competing Sunday stepped way down in distance.
Rashid Muse, typically an 800-meter runner, dropped all the way down to 200 meters, finishing in 25.75 seconds.
Matt Moller, another 800-meter runner usually, ran the 400 meters while making his season debut.
Ania Kapustka and Weronika Stancak ran the women's 400 meters Sunday, finishing in 1:05.30 and 1:09.17, respectively.
The Vikings will likely kick things more into gear next weekend when they head back up to Seattle for the UW Invitational, Jan. 27-28, at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
