Spokane, WA –
Tya Seth continues to impress.
Portland State's senior transfer put up one of the best rounds in school history on Tuesday and she led a surge by the Viking team in the second round of the Eagle Invitational.
Seth started slowly for the Vikings and was two-over par after five holes. She then birdied six of the next nine holes and finished with a career-best four-under par 68. That vaulted her from 22nd to a tie for third with one round to play at Indian Canyon Golf Course. At even-par 76-68=144 she is three shots back of the lead.
Portland State's school record for a single round is 67, shot five times previously. Viking players have now shot 68 on 13 different occasions. Seth had shot a career-best 69 in her first tournament with the Vikings two weeks ago.
Following Seth's lead, Portland State improved by 14 strokes over Monday's round, shooting 296 for the second-best team score of the day. It was also the best score by a PSU team since Feb. 22, 2020 - a stretch of 46 rounds. The Vikings are at 310-296=606 after 36 holes of the 54-hole event and have moved from sixth place to fourth in the nine-team event.
Seth's performance was by no means the only highlight of Tuesday's round. In fact, a pair of Viking freshmen saw big improvements over their Monday rounds.
Bayler Brundage bounced back from a Monday 87 to shoot 11 shots better with 76. She moved up 10 spots on the leaderboard.
Payten Shimizu improved by five strokes, going from 82 to 77.
