Former Portland State Golfer Krissy (Peterson) Carman has completed a remarkable return to golf as this morning she won the Women's USGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Fiddlesticks Country Club in Fort Myers, FL.
Carman, who had not played competitive golf from 2018-21, returned to play this past year, racking up a win at the 2022 Oregon Stroke Play Championship, medalist honors at the Oregon Amateur Championship, then runner-up at the Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship.Â
She qualified for the USGA Mid-Am and made a run this week that bagged her a National Championship. In this morning's final she defeated Aliea Clark of New York, 2 and 1. It capped a week in which Carman shot one-under par in stroke-play qualifying, then won five straight matches as the number-five seed, never having a match go as far as the 18th hole.
The final was set up by Carman's Wednesday afternoon win over number-one seed Jennifer Peng in a semifinal match, 3 and 2.Â
Carman shot a one-under par 143 in the stroke play portion of the competition earlier in the week to reach the round of 64. She took a 3 and 1 win over the number-60 seed Kathy Hartwiger, then a 6 and 5 win over number-28 Alexandra Austin. In the round of 16 Carman beat number-21 Ana Alicia Malagon Perez, 4 and 3. Then she defeated number-20 seed Kimberly Dinh 4 and 3 to reach the semifinals.
Carman, who played as Krissy Peterson for the Vikings from 2015-17 while earning her degree at PSU, is a native of Canby, OR who now lives in Eugene. While playing for the Vikings, Carman was a two-time All-Big Sky Conference performer, two-time All-Big Sky Tournament finisher and won the 2016 Oregon Women's Amateur Championship.Â
Carman had stepped away from competitive golf for three years (2018-21) and returned to the game when she and her husband, Mitchell, brought their two-year old son, Conrad, to the golf course in a jogging stroller.
The US Women's Mid-Amateur Championship originated in 1987 to provide a national competitive arena for amateurs age 25 and older.
