HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team was put to the test in its season opener on Thursday evening, falling to San Francisco 4-0 in a physical match under the lights at Hillsboro Stadium.
A hat trick by USF's Marissa Vasquez was the headline for the Dons. In the 16th minute, the sophomore netted her first goal of the match, followed by another strike in the 34th to give USF a 2-0 lead at the break.
It was a chippy second half from both sides, as three cards were shown in the final 45 minutes of action. Vazquez capitalized on a Viking foul in the 65th minute, adding to USF's lead with a penalty kick goal to take a 3-0 advantage. The Dons added one more in the 84th minute before fending off a pair of Viking shots down the stretch to secure the win.
Portland State tallied six shots, four of which came in the second half. Enya Hernandez and Sidney O'billovich split time in goal for the Vikings, combining for six saves.
The Vikings will now turn their attention to Sunday as they look to bounce back against Western Oregon. Kick-off is set for 5:05 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium.
