Box Score SAN DIEGO, Cali. – The Portland State women's tennis team fell in a close 4-3 dual against Point Loma Nazarene University on Friday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Vikings to 2-3 on the season while the Sea Lions improved to 1-1 overall.
"Today was a day of comebacks on both sides," Head Coach Kyle Russell said. "The pendulum, unfortunately, swung one too many times but we showed a lot of grit out there. We're learning lessons and getting better. We will go back to work and bring it again next match."
The Vikings started the day with a victory from Mariajose Hernandez Coronado and Emily Rees at No. 1 doubles, the duo's fifth win in a row. The Sea Lions kept themselves alive with a tight 7-5 win at No. 3 before Nika Beukers and Makoto Ohara battled their way to a 7-6 (3) victory at the No. 2 spot to secure the opening point for Portland State.
Maddie Egan extended the Vikings lead to begin singles action earning a 6-4, 7-5 win at line six before Point Loma tied the match with a pair of wins at No. 5 and No. 3. Playing at the No. 1 position for the first time in her career, Beukers clawed her way to a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 win to put the Vikings back on top. The Sea Lions knotted the score once again with a win at No. 4, leaving the deciding point to court two. After securing the opening set, Rees was unable to hold off PLNU's Angelique Friedrich in the final two sets, as Friedrich locked in the 4-3 victory for the Sea Lions.
