Keithan Gregg Promoted to Associate Head Coach; Mounier, Harris Join as Assistants as Vikings Complete Coaching Staff

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland State head women's basketball coach Chelsey Gregg completed her coaching staff Thursday, setting the Vikings up for what Gregg and the team hope is a productive summer ahead of its 2021-22 season.

Keithan Gregg will assume the associate head coaching role that Chelsey Gregg filled for the past three seasons, while two young assistants join the two Greggs as Beth Mounier and TJ Harris enter their first year on the Park Blocks.

The promotion for Keithan Gregg comes after he spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach, which followed two years as the Vikings' Director of Basketball Operations. The 2021-22 season will then be Keithan's seventh overall at Portland State.

"Keithan has shown tremendous loyalty and work ethic during his six previous years at Portland State and has played a vital role in both our 2018-19 championship run and continued program success," Chelsey Gregg said of Keithan.

"He is the mastermind behind our stifling defense which gives us a chance to win every game, and he has a knack for identifying and developing talent. He brings great energy, and with 12 years of coaching experience, 11 being at the collegiate level, Keithan has no doubt earned this promotion to associate head coach."

Keithan Gregg has orchestrated the Viking defense in his time on the Park Blocks, with his defensive schemes marking a strength of the program the past few years. The defense reached its pinnacle during the Vikings' championship run in the 2018-19 season. The Vikings led the Big Sky while ranking 13th in the nation in field goal percentage defense that season, holding opponents to only 35.6 percent shooting from the floor. The Vikings also led the Big Sky in steals per game (9.8), blocks per game (5.3) and turnover margin (+1.39) that season, and ranked second in scoring defense (60.3 points allowed per game) and three-point field goal percentage defense (30.4%).

Individually, Kylie Jimenez rose to second all-time at Portland State in career steals (283) during Gregg's tenure as an assistant, while Courtney West and Jordan Stotler finished 1-2 in career blocks at 260 and 146, respectively. Ashley Bolston, the 2018-19 Big Sky tournament MVP, also finished sixth all-time with 216 career steals at Portland State after working with Gregg.

"I truly appreciate the opportunity to continue coaching and pouring into these student-athletes here at Portland State," Gregg said of becoming associate head coach. "I'm extremely excited to move into a new role where I'll be able to support Coach Chelsey Gregg and her vision for this program. Coach Chelsey is a true leader and I can't wait to have our student-athletes on campus and get back to work."

The new faces on the Park Blocks come in Mounier and Harris, both of whom will bring plenty of expertise to the Vikings' coaching staff.

"They both are high-character individuals with a great work ethic and desire to learn and pour into our program. I'm so excited about what they bring to the table and how they will make us better on and off the court," Chelsey Gregg said of Mounier and Harris.

Mounier joins the Vikings as one of the most promising young assistants on the West coast. Mounier earned the honor of being a 2020 Tara VanDerveer fellow, which seeks to provide opportunities for aspiring females to excel in coaching. Mounier worked with VanDerveer as an Intern with the Stanford basketball team during the 2018-19 season. Mounier's responsibilities at Stanford saw her create personalized mailouts for ESPN No. 1 recruit Haley Jones, who went on to be named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four during Stanford's 2021 national championship run.

Mounier also learned directly from Heidi VanDerveer, Tara's sister, both as a player and a staff member at UC San Diego. Mounier played for Heidi VanDerveer at UCSD from 2014-17, and then joined the Tritons' staff as a video coordinator for the past two seasons.

"Beth understands that coaching goes far beyond the x's and o's. I'm excited about the way she will have an immediate impact on our program with her recruiting and player development experience and how she will empower these young women to reach their potential on and off the court," Gregg said of Mounier.

"She's had the opportunity to learn from the best in the business under Coach Heidi VanDerveer and Coach Tara VanDerveer and I'm thrilled to have her a part of our program."

As a player at UC San Diego, Mounier earned All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) first-team honors as a senior, when the Tritons won the CCAA regular-season title outright after sharing the honor the previous year. The Tritons shared the CCAA regular-season title again in Mounier's first year on staff in 2019-20, and the team also won the CCAA tournament title that season.

In her time at UC San Diego, Mounier worked directly with Heidi VanDerveer on the team's recruiting, scouting, on-court coaching and video breakdown efforts.

"It's an honor to join the Viking family. I'm excited to get started and help build upon a championship foundation here at Portland State," Mounier said.

Harris, finally, comes to the Vikings with experience coaching at multiple different levels. Before joining the Vikings, Harris worked as an AP Chemistry Teacher at Combs High School in San Tan Valley, Ariz., while also serving as a men's assistant coach at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Harris also simultaneously held head coaching responsibilities for the Boys and Girls teams at Northland Preparatory Academy in Flagstaff, Ariz., from 2017 to 2020.

"TJ has years of experience working both at the high school and college levels and brings immense knowledge of the game, leadership qualities, and the ability to foster meaningful relationships with our players, staff, and PSU community," Gregg said of Harris.

"His passion for the game along with being an advocate for mental, social, and emotional health for our student-athletes makes him a great addition to our program."

Harris played for the University of Great Falls (now the University of Providence) from 2011-15 where he crossed paths with his new colleague, Keithan Gregg. Harris earned first-team all-conference honors as a senior, when he averaged 14.8 points, 4.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting nearly 43 percent from three-point range.

"I'm very excited and thankful for this opportunity to join the women's basketball program at Portland State University and to work alongside Coach Gregg and the rest of the staff," Harris said of joining the Vikings.

The new coaching staff will be in place to welcome the Viking players back to campus on June 18 when the team will begin summer workouts.
