Vikings Sign Local Talent As Part Of 2021 Freshman Class

PORTLAND - The Portland State women's soccer announced the signing of Oregon natives, Abi Hoffman and Lucy Quinn to its 2021 freshman class this past month.

Putting pen to paper in January was Hoffman of Troutdale, Ore. The 5'8 midfielder is a three-time all-league and all-state selection from Sam Barlow High School. The 2018 Mt. Hood Conference Player of the Year earned All-American honors in 2019. Hoffman has spent six seasons with Crossfire United ECNL, appearing in two Surf Cup Championships in four years.

"Abi is a strong ball-winner, very technical under pressure giving her the ability to switch the point of attack for us," said head coach Katie Burton. "She also has great distribution and service to help our forwards get behind the back line and create a more dangerous attack for us."

To go along with a notable soccer career, Hoffman also earned all-conference honors in her three years as a placekicker for the Barlow football team.

She plans to pursue general studies at PSU.

Also arriving on campus next fall is Quinn, a senior out of Woodrow Wilson High School. The Portland native is a two-time all-league selection who led the Trojans to a Portland Interscholastic League Championship in 2019 while being named a top-25 midfielder in the state.

A product of the Oregon Olympic Development team, Quinn was part of a quarterfinal finish in the USYS Region IV Far West National Championships with the Westside Timbers in 2019. The 5'2 midfielder made consecutive appearances in the Oregon State Cup in 2018 and 2019.

"Lucy is a shifty midfielder who can naturally get out of tight spaces under pressure, dish, and get around defenders to get it back," said Burton. "She's smart in breaking down the defense and breaking into, and past, the back line adding another threat to our offense."

Quinn earned Scholar-Athlete honors alongside a Gold Key Art Award in her time at Wilson. She plans to major in film at Portland State.

Burton and Associate Head Coach Maureen Whitney are confident the duo will play an instant role in helping the program move forward when they arrive on campus next fall.

"These two will have an immediate impact on our growth and progress towards making a run for the 2021 Big Sky Championship. We are extremely excited they will be joining the Viking family this fall!"
