Thunderbirds Edge Past Vikings, 1-0, Behind Second-Half Goal

Despite maintaining strong defense, the Portland State women's soccer team were unable to find an equalizer in their 1-0 loss against Southern Utah Sunday.

The match had a slow start, with both teams' defense playing a strong game. The Thunderbirds (4-6-1, 1-1-0) outshot the Vikings 8-3 in the first half, but the Vikings (2-9-0, 0-2-0) came back offensively in the second, outshooting the Thunderbirds 6-5. But they did not manage to secure the goal they needed to tie the game.

The game remained scoreless until Ashlyn O'Malley snuck one by Vikings goalkeeper Finley Crabtree, putting the Thunderbirds on the board in the 53rd minute.

Crabtree had a handful of impressive saves throughout the match. Right before Southern Utah's lone goal, she dove across the net to shut down a strong attempt by the Thunderbirds. The Vikings' defenders also had some noteworthy plays, with both Josie DeLine and Kamaria Hughes breaking up near-goals multiple times.

The Vikings return home to Hillsboro Stadium on Oct. 15 for 1 p.m. match against Weber State.
