BOISE, Idaho – Six Portland State women's tennis players earned victories at the Barb Chandler Classic this past weekend.
The Vikings saw three pairs advance during the three-day event. They were one of five teams competing in the tournament hosted by Boise State which began on Friday, Oct. 1, and concluded on Sunday, Oct. 3.
PSU came out strong on Friday, picking up two first-round wins. Paired up in the Orange Flight were
Jacinta Milenkoski and
Maddie Egan who defeated Boise State's Shauna Heffernan and Corey Patton Lossner to advance. The duo battled back after falling in the doubles portion, each winning their singles matches to secure the 2-1 victory.
Also competing in the Orange Draw, Mariajose Cornado Hernandez and
Emily Rees swept their MSU opponents to advance. The pair defeated JJ Chen and Jazmin Lerman 6-3 in doubles action before closing the day with a pair of singles wins.
Both teams fell in the semifinal round on Saturday to earn third and fourth place in the Orange Flight.
Nika Beukers and
Makoto Ohara highlighted the Vikings in the Blue Flight. The pair completed a 2-1 victory over Montana State's Maria Villarejo and Mirte Van Beelen to secure a spot in the consolation final on Sunday. The duo won the consolation title on Sunday, defeating Idaho's Melissa Hutchet and Ines Oliveria 2-1.
Beukers ended the weekend with a team-high four wins, picking up a pair of victories in both singles and doubles.
Portland State will return to action at the Husky Invitational this weekend. The tournament will be played in Seattle beginning on Friday, Oct. 8.Â
