LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Portland State women's tennis team picked up a win in singles and in doubles on the final day of competition at the Long Beach State Winter Invite on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Vikings (0-1, 0-0 BSC) participated in the three-day tournament, playing duals against three different teams in that span, facing Portland, Long Beach State, and CSUN.
 
"All in all, it was a very productive weekend," said Head Coach Kyle Russell. "The event gave us a chance to walk through some concepts early on in the year. The players and I both feel like we are on the verge of putting it all together. It will take some time but that's what we will work towards."
 
Emily Rees tallied a win in singles over Portland's Jana Tanevska on day three, falling behind in set one 4-6 before rallying with 6-2, 6-2 wins in the final two sets. She also put in strong efforts in doubles, falling 6-3 with Eszter Zador and 6-4 with Lotti Meszaros.
 
Rees had another close match on day two, winning set one 6-2 before CSUN's Emma Roenholt edged out Rees in the next two sets, 7-5, 10-6.
 
"Emily really stood out for how she played and competed in both Singles and Doubles," said Russell. "Lotti also played great tennis this weekend and seemed like she was always knocking on the door. Eventually, she's going to bust it down. All the players took a step forward so I'm happy."
 
Meszaros took a set in her final two singles matches, falling to CSUN's Jolene Coetzee 6-4, 4-6, 7-10 on day two, and to Neli Sunjic of Portland 6-4, 2-6, 2-6 on day three.
 
In doubles, Gerda Upeniece and Zador teamed up to earn a victory over a duo from CSUN, winning 6-2 on day three.
 
The Vikings return to dual play next weekend as they travel to Eugene to face Oregon on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 12 p.m.
