Box Score SEATTLE – The Portland State women's tennis team played a hard-fought match on Saturday before falling to 14
th-ranked Washington 7-0 at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"Washington is a really strong team and that was certainly evident today," said Head Coach
Kyle Russell. "It was great to get a match under our belt and shed some of the early season jitters."
The Huskies (1-0) started the day sweeping the three doubles competitions to earn an early point in the dual.
Lotti Meszaros and
Nina Nikitovic turned in the best effort, falling 6-2 against Washington's top duo.
Jacinta Milenkoski and
Alli Valk dropped their match 6-0 along with
Eszter Zador and
Emily Rees in the third spot.
Competing in the sixth spot, Rees turned in one of the best results for the Vikings in singles play, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Ashley Chang. Meszaros also lost 6-3, 6-3 in her singles match as she faced Washington's highest-ranked player in Katarina Kopcalic who is ranked 88
th in all of Division I.
"There were some flashes of good tennis out there and we're excited to get back to work before our tournament next weekend," added Russell.
Valk started strong in her opening set before falling 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 while Zador improved in her second set, 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Playing at No. 1, Milenkoski fell 6-0, 6-1 to Washington's Vanessa Wong who holds a national ranking at No. 102.
The Vikings return to action next weekend as they travel to Southern California to compete at the Long Beach State Winter Invite starting Friday, Jan. 16.
