Vikings Fall Twice to League Leaders

The Big Sky regular season champions visited Hillsboro, Ore. on Friday afternoon and showed why they have just a single loss in conference play. The best offense in the Big Sky proved its worth against the Portland State pitching staff in doubleheader sweep.

Portland State (18-29/7-9 BSC) had a hard time limiting the offensive firepower of the Wildcats over the two games, despite some exceptional plays in the field. The Vikings dropped to 7-9 in Big Sky play following the doubleheader, which, combined with Idaho State's two wins, locks PSU in at either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed at next weekend's Big Sky Tournament.

The Vikings celebrated the StrikeOut cancer game in the opener, having Rachel Menlove's mom and Kaela Morrow's aunt - both cancer survivors - throw ceremonial first pitches in an emotional start to the day.

Menlove provided another memorable moment in the first game with a three-run homer in the seventh inning. She provided most of Portland State's runs on the day, driving in four over the two games. Darian Lindsey also performed well at the plate, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a couple of walks and a couple of near-home runs over the two games. Tayler Gunesch also reached base in both games, extending her streak to 14 games.

Game One - Weber State 7, Portland State 5

Lindsey provided the Vikings with a hot start, ripping a double into right field. The Vikings had two straight groundouts following the leadoff double, but both moved her forward a base to get Portland State on the board first.

Katie Schroeder had an impressive start to the game inside the circle, getting out of the first two innings easily. But Takesha Saltern, who leads the Big Sky in hitting, got a two-out hit in the third to start a rally. Schroeder walked the next batter and a double from Chloe Camarero scored two runs to give Weber State the lead.

Portland State then had perhaps its best chance at a big inning in the bottom of the third. Lindsey led off with a walk and Jessica Flanagan and Tayler Gunesch each followed with singles to load the bases with no outs. Weber State's defense rose to the challenge in two straight at bats, cutting down the runner at home to avoid damage.

Then Sala Pedebone drew a two-out walk to score a run and tie the game back up at 2-all. Still, the Vikings left the bases loaded and scored just one run, which they would soon come to regret. Weber State scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good, but the game remained very tight.

Portland State had some outstanding defensive plays over the next few innings, including a long-ranging play from Gunesch in center field and an inning where Lindsey recorded every single out. But in the top of the seventh, Weber State opened the game up, scoring four runs on four hits to go ahead 7-2.

The Vikings rallied in the bottom half. Marissa Bruno led off with a line drive single and Lindsey drew her second walk of the game to put two runners on. Back-to-back outs had the Vikings against the wall, but Menlove gave them a sign of life. She blasted a no-doubt home run, her sixth of the year, into left field. Weber State would retire the next batter, however, ending the game at 7-5.

Game Two - Weber State 17, Portland State 1 (5 innings)

Weber State dominated the second game, scoring more runs than any other Portland State opponent since a road game against UTEP in February of 2018. The Wildcats rocked Portland State's pitching staff for 19 hits in five innings and put up nine runs in the third inning in the win.

The Vikings scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by Menlove.

Portland State will look for a bounce back in the final game of the series tomorrow during Senior Day. The Vikings will honor Alyssa Burk, Kaela Morrow and Emma Detamore before the first pitch at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow.
