Seniors Lead the Way in 5-2 Win Over Weber State

Portland State second basemen Riley Casper may have said it best before the game, "Magic happens on Senior Day."

The Vikings, honoring two seniors playing their final home, certainly got a little magic from Alyssa Burk and Kaela Morrow in a win that gives Portland State all sorts of momentum heading into the Big Sky Championships next week in Sacramento.

The Vikings honored Burk and Morrow, as well as junior Emma Detamore, who had her career cut short because of injury, in an emotional ceremony before the start of the game Saturday morning. The two seniors then delivered nearly perfect performances, leading their team to the 5-2 win over Big Sky regular season champion Weber State.

"There is so much emotion involved in Senior Day and I'm just so proud of those two for controlling what they can control and taking advantage of the opportunities that were put in front of them," head coach Meadow McWhorter said following the game.

Portland State (19-29/8-9 BSC) handed Weber State just its second conference loss and snapped a four-game losing streak in the process. They did it behind the arm of Burk, who threw a complete game and limited the best offense in the conference to just five hits, and the bat of Morrow, who drove in three of the five Portland State runs on a pair of hits.

The Vikings were coming off a pair of tough losses the the Wildcats on Friday, but responded in the best way possible. They join Idaho State as the only Big Sky teams to defeat Weber State in the regular season, but more importantly they showed the determination that this Viking team plays with.

"It was very important (to get a win today)," McWhorter said. "It goes to show the heart, character and fight of this team. When we are firing on all cylinders and they are playing for each other, this team is unstoppable. I told them this was one of the wins I'm most proud of because it shows our perseverance. The ability to just press the restart button and go out and battle and give everything you have."

The top of the lineup gave Portland State trouble all weekend, and the trend looked to continue as Weber State opened the game up with back-to-back hits. But Burk handled the start and showed her composure, striking out two batters on her way to escaping the early jam.

Then it was Morrow's turn to get the offense started. Darian Lindsey, for the third time in the series, led off with a double off the fence. She advanced to third later, but was still there when Morrow stepped up with two outs. The senior delivered, smacking a single through the right side to give Portland State the lead.

Burk followed that up by retiring Weber State in order, and the Vikings opened up a huge lead in the bottom half of the second inning. Marissa Bruno had a single to put herself on base, but Portland State had two outs when they got back to the top of the order. Lindsey drew a walk and Jessica Flanagan had an infield single to load the bases.

Tayler Gunesch then scored a run with another infield single, an in-between ball towards first and second that she beat the throw on. Portland State then got a little help from a defensive mistake by Weber State to score another run and keep the bases loaded for Morrow.

Once again, the senior came up with a clutch hit. She ripped one right back up the middle to plate to Vikings and put the home team ahead 5-0.

There was a shaky moment in the fourth inning, when a hit batter and two walks allowed Weber State to score a pair of runs to cut the lead to 5-2.

Burk regained control, however, allowing just one hit over the last three innings. On the very last play of the game, Burk delivered a pitch that was popped up into foul territory. Who else was there to catch it but Morrow, as the seniors ended the game and their home Portland State careers together.

Burk allowed five hits and two runs while striking out five Wildcats in her fifth win of the season. Morrow led the offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Lindsey finished off a spectacular series with a 2-for-3 day that saw her score twice. She hit .750 over the three games and finished the conference season with a .431 average.

Marissa Bruno had a perfect day at the plate going 3-for-3 and Flanagan also had a multi-hit game.

Now, Portland State will have to wait and see the results of the Montana-Southern Utah series before they know what seed they will be at the Big Sky Championships in Sacramento next week. The Vikings will play in the first game of the tournament on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.

Portland State will play as either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed. If Montana wins its two remaining games, the Vikings will be No. 5 and take on Sacramento State in the first round. If Montana splits its final two games, the Vikings will be No. 5 and play Montana. If the Grizzlies finish 0-2, the Vikings would overtake them as the No. 4 team.

No matter who they play in the first round, the season-ending win has given McWhorter and her team the confidence that they can go down to Sacramento and beat anybody. The Vikings had a good run at last year's tournament before weather forced it to end early. This year, they are looking for redemption.

"It's big to know that we can beat what is the top dog in our conference this year," McWhorter said. "We will have opportunities with other opponents that we didn't beat in the regular season and we're looking forward to that."
