Vikings Crush Pioneers in Home Sweep

The Portland State tennis team put on a dominant show at the Vancouver Tennis Center on Saturday morning, sweeping Lewis & Clark 7-0. The Vikings never trailed in a singled match and won all six in straight sets, putting together their most complete performance of the year.

"Lewis & Clark kept fighting and I give a lot of respect to them," head coach Jay Sterling said. "I was really proud of the way our girls stayed tough and kept the pressure off."

The Vikings swept through the double competition to start. Jacinta Milenkoski and Alli Valk cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3, but the matches got more challenging up the lineup. At No. 2, Nina Nikitovic and Eszter Zador won 6-3 while Lotti Meszaros and Taylor Rees outlasted their opponent at No. 1 6-4.

In singles, Portland State started slightly slow, but rebounded in a big win. They won each match in straight sets and allowed Lewis & Clark to win just three total games in second sets. Zador was the first to finish, winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4. Zador is 7-3 overall this year and was on pace for an eighth win last weekend when a match went unfinished.

Milenkoski, meanwhile, has improved after going up against some of the Big Sky's best over the last two weeks. She won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 to put the Vikings ahead 3-0. She has now won two of her last four matches overall.

The clinching point came from Nikitovic, who cruised 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. Nikitovic has now won four of her last seven matches and, like Zador, was on pace for another win when the UTEP match was called.

The rest of the match went just as smoothly for the rest of the Vikings. Meszaros won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 for her third win in the last six matches. She is 4-5 when playing at No. 2 this year.

Alli Valk won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 and continues her run of good play. Valk now has two straight wins and has won five of her last eight. She has been excellent when playing at No. 5, compiling a 5-2 record since moving to the spot.

The final point came from Taylor Rees, who followed up her teammates with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win for her second victory of the season. This has been one of the best performances of the season for the Vikings and they will look to build off of it with just three matches left on the season.

"We are improving and each match for the rest of our season is going to be progressively more difficult," Sterling said. "We go and play a really solid and respectable D-II program in Dixie State that we can't look past because we will have a fight on our hands. Then we go to the altitude and play Southern Utah who is playing well and then come back home against a good Sacramento State team. We have a ladder to climb each week.

"We have to build on this and learn. We played really well today but we still didn't play to our full potential. We made some mistakes and still missed a few too many returns. Luckily today we were able to recover from that, but each week the price for those kind of things is going to be higher."

MATCH NOTES: The Vikings are now 10-6 all-time vs. Lewis & Clark … Eszter Zador won her sixth match at No. 2 singles, which is tied for the seventh most in a single season in program history … Alli Valk is 5-2 at No. 5 and with one more win would crack into the top 10 single season wins at the line.
